Walt was born in Darby, Pennsylvania to Carmella (Dolly) Bizzaro and Walter L. Newlin. His childhood was spent in the close knit parish of Saint Laurence in the neighborhood of Upper Darby, PA. Walt graduated from Monsignor Bonner High School, Gwynedd Mercy University School of Nursing and Pennsylvania Hospital School of Anesthesia.
Walt served on active duty in the United States Army during the Vietnam era in Africa and the Pacific. He became jump-qualified with the Utah Army National Guard. Later he transferred to the U.S. Air Force Reserve serving at Hill Air Force Base in the Reserve Fighter Wing. He was commissioned as a captain in the 419th MEDS Squadron as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA); he completed his service as a major.
Walt worked as a CRNA for 40 years, focusing the last 30 years in the Labor and Delivery unit in the Salt Lake City area. He created life-long friendships with the many nurses and doctors he worked alongside.
Walt met Nancy (McAuley), the love of his life, while growing-up together in the same parish outside Philadelphia. Their 6-decade long partnership included 52 years of marriage, a cross-country move and raising their four sons. They enjoyed a rich life of travel and adventure—spanning the globe whether by Harley, cruise ship or by air.
As an avid Harley enthusiast, he was a member of the Rough Riders Motorcycle Club, Monument Chapter. Walt was a life-long fan of his beloved Philadelphia Phillies and Eagles (GO BIRDS!)
He was preceded in death by his parents, and is survived by his wife Nancy Newlin, sons Christopher Newlin (Adrienne), Timothy Newlin (Lindsay), Scott Newlin (Emily Anderson) and Matthew Newlin (Anna) and their grandchildren; his sister Mary Ann DiNunzio, niece Laura DiNunzio and nephew Stephen DiNunzio; in-laws Patrick McAuley (Renee), Danny McAuley (Diana) and Kate McAuley.
