Thomas Earl Day passed away November 27, 2024, after a long illness, in his home, surrounded by his loved ones. He was born in Boise, Idaho, on January 18, 1944, to Max Earl Day and Thelma Louise Abraham. Throughout his early childhood, he and his parents and his two older sisters, Shirley and Carol, lived in Idaho, California, Illinois, and then finally in Bountiful, Utah.
Tom attended elementary school in Chicago and then Stoker Elementary School in Bountiful, Bountiful Jr. High, and graduated from Bountiful High School in 1962 where he was involved in Key Club, Choir, was Sterling Scholar in Mathematics and was the Valedictorian for his graduating class.
He attended the University of Utah in the Fall of 1962 and then served a mission to Austria from 1963 to 1966. While serving in Austria, he sang with a small group of missionaries, performing all over the country. In 1966, he returned to Bountiful and enrolled again at the University of Utah. He met Susan Broschinsky at his parents’ ward and after a short courtship, they were sealed in the Salt Lake Temple in May of 1967. In that same year, he received a draft notice for the Vietnam War and enrolled in ROTC to become an officer, which allowed him to finish his undergraduate schooling. He graduated from the University of Utah with a degree in Physics in 1968 and began active duty in the United States Air Force in June of 1969.
He and his family moved to Big Spring, Texas, where he began flight training in the T37 aircraft at Webb Air Force Base. He was then transferred to Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta, Georgia, where he became an Air Force Captain and began training fighter pilots in the T38 aircraft. In 1974, Tom was discharged from active duty and the family moved back to Bountiful, Utah. During this period of 1968-1973, they welcomed four children into their family.
In 1975, Tom created his own wheat mill and food storage business. In 1976, he moved his family into a new home in North Salt Lake, Utah. From 1976 to 1985, they had three more children added to their family. He was active in his ward and stake, and kept busy with his businesses and his large family. He obtained an MBA from the University of Utah in 1981 and was involved with many different business ventures until he became an insurance agent for Prudential Insurance in 1985.
In 1992, Tom and Susan sold their home in North Salt Lake and bought a town home in Centerville, Utah. He continued to work for Prudential and eventually he and Susan started their own business, National Care Planning Council, an internet-based listing service for providers of long-term care emphasizing veteran benefits. He was very proud of his work in helping Veterans and their families receive compensation through the resources of his business. He wrote several books on Veteran’s benefits, long-term care planning and hundreds of articles on elderly care through his business which helped many people over the years.
Tom struggled with neuropathy for 40 years and developed cancer in 2013. He was very determined not to let this interfere with his life. He was very active in finding solutions to his health problems and took great care of himself.
He was a fighter to the end.
