Thiel A. Kunz

November 25, 1929 — May 9, 2024

Thiel Allen Kunz was born November 25, 1929 in Bern, Idaho to Heber Christian Kunz and Marie Clark Kunz.

He was raised on a farm alongside five brothers who learned to be hard workers. Thiel said he was the family designated cowboy.

He served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Southern California where he went his first year without purse or scrip.

He attended Utah State University earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Forestry. He also took ROTC and upon completion of college served his time in the military, mostly stationed in Heidelberg, Germany. While there he “hitchhiked” on airplanes and traveled to Rome, Greece, and other locations throughout Europe.

Upon returning home, he met and married JoAnn Burrup of Downey, Idaho. They had seven children. He spent forty years as a forest ranger in the United States Forest Service.

After he retired, he and JoAnn served a mission in Las Vegas, Nevada. After his sweetheart, JoAnn passed away, he met and married Susan Cook. They served a mission in the Salt Lake City South Mission. He also served many stake and service missions throughout his life.

He is survived by his wife Susan, children Allen Kunz, Joy (John) Newsome, Colene (Dennis) Muesborn, Janet (Lisa Kate Nelson) Chenoweth, Diana (Douglas) Bess, and Lisa (Mike) Hughes, Susan’s children, Doug (Jane) Curfew, Laura (JR) Kemner, Bob (Rachael) Curfew, 27 grandchildren and numerous great-grandchildren, sibling John Kunz (Carolyn). He was preceded in death by his parents, wife JoAnn, a son Brent, and four brothers.

Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, May 18, 2024 at the Tooele 17th ward building located at 132 North 570 East, Tooele, Utah, where a viewing will be held from 9:00 am to 9:45 am prior to services. Interment will be at the Bern Cemetery in Bern, Idaho.
