Sylvia Burnett Huffaker

March 29, 1932 — June 19, 2022

Sylvia Burnett Huffaker returned to the loving arms of her Heavenly Father on June 19, 2022, in Bountiful, Utah, after a lingering battle with dementia.

Sylvia or, “Sylvie”, as she was known to her loved ones, was born in Ogden, Utah March 29, 1932, to James Martin Burnett and Anna Eliza Chamberlain Burnett. She was the youngest of eight children.

Sylvia was a faithful lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in many positions including a mission to the Netherlands where she fell in love with the Dutch people and their beautiful culture, a love she carried with her the rest of her life.

After returning from her mission, she married Vernon Davis Huffaker and had three children, Rex, David, and Kristine. Sylvia always considered being a wife and mother her highest calling and cherished time with her children and grandchildren. She loved having family dinners on Sundays, always trying out new recipes she found in her favorite magazines.

Sylvia thoroughly enjoyed a rewarding career of over 20 years for the Davis County School District in the office and specifically the counseling department at Centerville Junior High and Viewmont High School where she was able to keep a close eye on her children who attended there…much to their chagrin.

Sylvia loved little children and was known for asking mothers at the grocery store if their babies were for sale, an offer she also loved repeatedly extending to her grandchildren regarding her great-grandchildren.

Sylvia was a talented writer and loved writing poetry. She will live on in the witty lyrics she wrote to celebrate her loved ones’ milestones, and in the heartfelt lines she dedicated to them in their times of trial.

Sylvia is preceded in death by her parents, siblings, daughter-in-law, Kimberly, and grandson David. She is survived by husband Vernon, and children Rex (Kimberly) Huffaker, David (Sharon) Huffaker, and Kris (Dwight) Christensen, 8 grandchildren, and 8 great-grandchildren.

As a family, we wish to acknowledge the many kindnesses of all who befriended her, and especially the staff of the Memory Care section of Creekside Senior Living, and her hospice nurses who offered her unfailing care and comfort in her transition.

A visitation will be held on Friday, June 24, 2022, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Russon Mortuary, 295 North Main Street, Bountiful, Utah. This will be followed by a private graveside memorial at the Salt Lake City Cemetery.
