Susan Shurtleff Vandehei, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 25, 2026. She was born in Ogden, Utah, on October 11, 1944, and spent her life lifting others through her faith, her service, and her boundless love.
On November 24, 1964, Susan married her best friend and eternal companion, David Vandehei, in the Salt Lake City Temple. Their 61 years together stand as a testament to devotion, partnership, and enduring love. Together they built a beautiful family, five children, fourteen grandchildren, and three great‑grandchildren, with two more soon to join the family she cherished above all else.
Susan’s life was a testament to service, devotion, and joy. She served faithfully in many Church callings, taught Seminary, and supported her ward and stake with unwavering dedication. Daily scripture study and prayer guided her actions and shaped her gentle spirit. She spent 11 years greeting visitors on Temple Square and later shared her passion for skiing and Utah’s mountains as a docent at the Alf Engen Ski Museum. Whether skiing, playing the piano, sewing, or gathering with her grandchildren, Susan brought light and kindness to everyone around her.
Her greatest happiness came from her family. She loved spending time with her grandchildren, especially their cherished tradition of Christmas shopping individually with each one every year. To all who knew her, Susan was selfless, gentle, and full of grace, an angel on earth whose quiet acts of love touched countless lives.
Susan is survived by her devoted husband, David; her children Darin (Kate), Paul (Ara), Brad (Kathy), Mark, and Amy (Jeremy); and her grandchildren and great‑grandchildren. She is preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, and one grandson.
The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the compassionate team at Legacy House for the loving care they provided to Susan.
Her legacy of faith, service, and unconditional love will continue to bless her family and all who were fortunate enough to know her.
