Listen to Obituary

It is with deep sorrow but grateful hearts we share that Steven Kay Smith passed away peacefully in his home in Layton, Utah, on September 30, 2026. He has returned home to the arms of his Savior and is free from the many challenges and limitations he faced on his earthly journey.

Born February 24, 1969, in Ogden, Utah, to Lorin Kay Smith and Cleone Carrigan. Steven was a handsome, chubby, brown-eyed, curly-haired boy full of energy and mischief. He had a zest for life and enjoyed playing sports: basketball, and baseball. Steve was very passionate about BYU sports and the Utah Jazz, even in their terrible, not so good years. He loved fishing and hunting with his father and many uncles. Steven spoke fondly of his childhood and the love he had for his grandparents and many cousins.

Steven's childhood took a turn when he was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor at the age of 12. He endured many brain surgeries and cancer treatments for over six years.

Cancer took many things from Steve, yet he rarely complained about how difficult his life was. Instead, he showed incredible strength and determination, getting up each day to face whatever challenges came his way. Through it all, he kept his sense of humor and his positive outlook.

Even through the hardships of cancer treatments, Steven was able to graduate from Ogden High School; however, he was more proud to “star” as an extra in the movie 3 O’Clock High, filmed at Ogden High School his senior year. He also earned the rank of Eagle Scout and received the Duty to God award. Steven served a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Ohio Cleveland Mission. On December 21, 1999, he was sealed to Sara Studer in the St. Louis, Missouri Temple.

He went to the temple weekly to do proxy work even though it was a little more challenging for him to get there. Steve has a strong testimony of his Heavenly Father and of his Savior, Jesus Christ.

Steve rarely missed a sacrament meeting. Even when physical limitations should have kept him home, he persistently found a way to make it to church. More details upon request…

Steven is survived by his loving family: his parents, Lorin and Cleone Smith; sisters Lori (Doug) Laws, Diane (Troy) Burdett, and Jill (Ryan) Rosier; and brother Jeffrey Smith. He loved his 17 nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Mark Smith; sister-in-law, Esther Smith; nephew, Zachary Ryan Rosier; paternal grandparents, Archie and Mary Smith; and maternal grandparents, Walker and Althea Carrigan.
