Roy Scott Nicholson

February 8, 1945 — July 26, 2021

Roy Scott Nicholson peacefully passed away on Monday July 26th, 2021. He was 76.

Roy was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on February 8th, 1945 and was the third child of William Otto and Sara Spencer Nicholson. After attending Highland High school, he was called to serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, assigned to what was then the Northwestern States Mission. Upon his return Roy enrolled at Weber State College. It was there he met Rolayne Reeder, who would become the love of his life. They were sealed to each other in the Salt Lake Temple on the 18th of March, 1968. Roy was a member of the Utah Army Reserve, where he honed the cooking skills that would serve him (and everyone around him) well throughout his life. After Roy retired from Xerox, he and Rolayne spent 23 months serving as ordinance workers in the Manila Philippines Temple. They continued this service in the Bountiful Temple upon their return to Utah.

Roy loved both the outdoors and sharing knowledge, the combination of which created the perfect Scoutmaster (if there ever was one). He served the young men in his neighborhood in this capacity for 14 of his 29 years in the scouting program. Not only did Roy recite the Scout Oath and Scout Law innumerable times, he strived to live the principles found therein and inspired countless others to do the same. He completed thirteen 50-mile hikes in the high Uintas with his scouts, and was a recipient of the Silver Beaver award. He enjoyed hiking and would take nearly every opportunity to do so, spending much of his later years exploring the foothills above Bountiful and Centerville. Roy also had a great love of music. He was able to pick out and hum or whistle harmonies in songs he barely knew. This love of music was ingrained in each of his children.

Roy was a devoted husband, father, and follower of Jesus Christ. He was a blessing to those who knew him and will be greatly missed.

Roy is survived by his darling wife of 53 years, Rolayne, their children Brian (Amy), Robert (Pamela), Eric (Sara Jane), Catherine Ann “Can” (James) Merrill, Janene (Peter) Wirthlin, Travis (Leslie), Jeffery (Stephanie), Sherrie Lynn (Justin) Clarke, Jared (Wendy), and 32 grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, brother William Spencer Nicholson, sister Novella Kay Nye, and grandson Donaven Clarke.

A viewing will be held on Sunday, August 1st, 2021 from 6:00-8:00 pm at Russon Mortuary, 295 North Main, Bountiful Utah, 84010. Services will then be held at 11:00 a.m. on Monday August 2nd, 2021, at the West Bountiful Chapel, 311 North 800 West, with a viewing from 9:45-10:45 am prior to services.
