Ronald Lawrence Huber, age 86, passed away peacefully in his Taylorsville home on June 16, 2026.
Born March 6, 1940, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to parents Lawrence and Jeanne Huber, Ron possessed a notably strong will and drive. At an early age, he channeled this into sports and the outdoors. He was a gifted athlete, and by the time he graduated from West High School in 1958, he held a state title in wrestling and received All-Region recognition in football.
After serving two-and-a-half years in the Swiss/Austria Mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Ron was introduced to a fellow missionary's sister, Marlene Nelson. Marlene would quickly become the love of Ron's life, and the two would be sealed to each other on June 29, 1965, in the Salt Lake Temple. They would have two children. In 1967 they had their only son, Lance, an artist imbued with his father's drive and passion, and two years later, in 1969, they would have a daughter, Melissa, born with Ron's sarcastic wit and care for others preprogrammed into her.
Upon graduating from the University of Utah with a bachelor's degree in History and a minor in Physical Education, Ron's love for sports and helping others led to an illustrious teaching career. He educated the youth of Salt Lake City's east side at Churchill Jr. High, Skyline High, and finally Olympus High School, where he spent most of his career. During his 40-year career, Ron coached teams in five high school sports, notably basketball and football, and led top-ten-ranked state tournament teams in four of those sports; in 1982, he was named the Green Sheet Coach of the Year.
From a very early age, Ron's competitive drive influenced more than just his athletic abilities. He was a skilled hunter and fisherman who enjoyed the cool air of an October morning in the West Desert and the sound of a line cast over any pond with space to park a lawn chair. While he may have enjoyed scoring the biggest buck or catching the heaviest trout in his youth, what he taught his grandchildren was an immense love of nature through his insistence that watching the sun rise over the hills outside Garrison, Utah, was more important than a successful hunt. Boy Scouts and his father taught him to hunt and fish, and his mother taught him to garden. Ron deeply valued and grew these gifts all his life, and age never truly touched him until it stole his ability to enjoy them.
Ron marched to the beat of his own drum and conveyed his indomitable spirit through the unique tempo he played. His service-oriented life, fierce loyalty, and refusal to conform built a legacy of students, athletes, neighbors, and a family who will spend the rest of their lives thinking of and missing him. The impacts of Ron's life will ripple through the community long after those who know his name are gone.
He is survived by his devoted wife, Marlene Nelson Huber; daughter, Melissa (Michael) Hoppe; sisters, Sherry (Tom) Johnson, Jeannine Mulhair, and Rosalee Gale; grandchildren, Dalin Hoppe, Dakota (Dylan) Coleman, Kohlton (Crystal) Hoppe, Marnie Hoppe, and Mitchell Ronald Huber; great grandchild, Kaius Orion Hoppe; and numerous nieces, nephews, and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Lawrence and Jeanne Huber; his son, Lance Huber; his sister, Carolynne Huber Godfrey; and his brothers-in-law, Frank Godfrey, Bill Mulhair, and Wayne Gale.
To those who wish to grieve, a viewing will be held on Monday, June 22, 2026, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. and again on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, from 9:45-10:45 a.m. at Russon Brothers Mortuary, 295 N.
