Roma Magnuson Thomas

February 6, 1930 — November 30, 2025

Bountiful, UT

Roma Thomas, age 95, passed away peacefully in her sleep in her family home on Sunday, November 30th. Roma was born on February 6, 1930 in Castle Dale, Utah, to Ada and George Magnuson.

Raised on a farm during the Great Depression, Roma learned the value of hard work and thrift. Her father taught her how to ride a horse and herd cattle, and at age 15 she raised a blue–ribbon-winning steer. She loved to garden and can her own produce. In high school, Roma played the snare drum in the band, and she was a switchboard operator in her hometown, often listening in on local gossip.

At age 18, Roma married her high school sweetheart, Jack Gordon Thomas. Together, they raised seven children who brought joy and purpose to their lives. Through 77 years of marriage, they built a beautiful life of resilience and faith, despite the heartbreaking losses of three of their sons.

Roma found joy in creating beauty. She was a master seamstress, sewing everything from baby clothes to wedding dresses. Roma fell in love with quilting and gifted dozens of quilts to family and friends, and she has passed on her love of quilting to many. Roma loved to knit, crocket, read, and had a beautiful alto voice, singing in church choirs throughout her life.

Roma was a woman of faith who loved serving in the temple. A highlight of her life was taking Institute classes at the University of Utah and delving deep into the doctrines of the gospel of Jesus Christ. She and her husband served a mission to Eugene, Oregon from 2004 to 2005.

Roma’s life was defined by kindness, service, and devotion to her family. Her legacy lives on in her children, grandchildren, extended family, and all who were touched by her gentle presence and compassionate heart. She will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered.

Roma is survived by her husband, Gordon; children David (Pam) Thomas, Stuart (LuAnn) Thomas, Joni (Paul) Cheney, and Steve Thomas; 15 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three of her sons: Ralph, Dick, and Phillip.

Funeral services will be held Friday, December 5th, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. at the Val Verda 4th Ward chapel, 2633 South 50 West, Bountiful, Utah. A viewing will be held Friday morning prior to the funeral from 9:30 a.m.– 10:30 a.m.
