Robert “Bob” Louis Payne, beloved husband, father, grandfather, church leader, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 12, 2026 after a brief but fierce battle with cancer. He was 66 years old.
Bob was born on September 1, 1959, in Omaha, Nebraska. During his childhood, his family lived in several places, including Japan and San Diego, before settling in Davis County, Utah, where he graduated from Davis High School.
An exceptional athlete, Bob earned First Team All-State honors in football, basketball, and baseball. He captained each team and was part of four state championship teams. His love of baseball continued at the University of Utah, where he pitched for the Utes before serving a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
Bob faithfully served in the Rochester, New York Mission, where he treasured the people he met and even enjoyed portraying Ammon in the Hill Cumorah Pageant. After returning home, he completed his undergraduate degree in Finance and later earned his Juris Doctor from Brigham Young University. During that time, a blind date led him to his beautiful wife Lisa, beginning a marriage filled with love, faith, and devotion.
Together, Bob and Lisa built a beautiful family. His five children were the center of his world, and nothing brought him greater joy than being “Papa” to his 13½ grandchildren. He is lovingly survived by his wife, Lisa; his children Brandon (Hannah), Janica (Nolan), Shanna (Zach), Ali (Adam), and Staci (Jacob); along with his cherished grandchildren, who brought endless happiness to his life.
Professionally, Bob enjoyed a distinguished career as a corporate attorney. While his accomplishments were many, those who knew him best will remember him not for his titles, but for his unwavering integrity, wisdom, and genuine concern for others.
A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Bob dedicated his life to serving the Savior and those around him. Among his many callings, he especially treasured serving as Bishop of the Farmington 9th Ward, where he developed deep and lasting relationships with the youth. In later years, he found great joy serving in the Bountiful Utah Temple.
Bob had a rare gift for teaching with bold conviction and remarkable eloquence. Whether speaking from the pulpit, in a classroom, or one-on-one, he had a unique ability to make eternal truths both understandable and unforgettable. His warm smile, unmistakable bear hugs, and ability to brighten every room reflected the same genuine love that defined his life.
When he wasn’t practicing law or serving at church, Bob could most often be found cheering on his children and grandchildren at sporting events and recitals. He also enjoyed taking his motorcycle out on the open road with his Wild Hog riding group.
Bob’s influence will continue through the countless lives he touched as a husband, father, grandfather, mentor, church leader, neighbor, and friend. His legacy of faith, integrity, service, and unconditional love will endure for generations.
