Robert (Bob) Lin Lowe passed away peacefully in his sleep on June 26, 2026, just two days before his 80th birthday.
Bob was born in Wendell, Idaho, on June 28, 1946, the oldest of six children born to Linden Emmit and Una Elizabeth Lowe. When Bob was six, the family moved to San Bernardino, California, where he grew up and later graduated from Eisenhower High School in 1964. Following high school, Bob served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Western States Mission, based in Denver, Colorado. After returning home, he met the love of his life, Jeanne Ann (Jan) Gillum, while in college. Bob and Jan were married in the Los Angeles LDS Temple on April 2, 1968, and started growing their family the following year, welcoming six children over the next 12 years.
In 1968, Bob joined the U.S. Army, serving as a Cryptographic Field Technician in Vietnam. After three years of active duty, he transferred to the Utah Army National Guard as a Cannon Crewmember and started taking classes at Weber State College. He later transferred to Utah State University, graduating in 1975 with a Bachelor of Science in Vocational Agriculture with an Education degree.
Bob began his career teaching Vocational Agriculture at Richfield High School, moving his young family to Richfield, Utah. After two years, he realized teaching wasn't his true calling, but his incredible work ethic shone through as he happily worked multiple jobs to support his growing family. After a short move to the town of Glenwood, Utah, Bob discovered a true passion for environmental science, specifically drinking water protection. He worked with the Central Utah District Health Department as a Water Sanitarian & Water Testing Lab Manager and later the Six County Commissioners Org as a Water Quality Planner. In 1982, Bob "crossed into the blue" and joined the Utah Air National Guard as a Public Health Specialist, where he met many lifelong friends.
In 1988, he accepted a position with the Utah Department of Environmental Quality's Division of Drinking Water, prompting a final move to Bountiful, Utah, into the family’s forever home. Throughout his distinguished 36-year military career and a retiring rank of Master Sergeant with service across the Army, Army National Guard, and Air National Guard, Bob traveled the world, visiting England, Italy, South Korea, Japan, Niger, and locations all over the United States. He always came home with an expanded knowledge of local history, customs, and culture, and was always eager to share his new knowledge with his family. Bob retired from the Department of Environmental Quality in the year 2000 and was hired to do similar work with the federal government over the next several years. During this time he had the opportunity to travel throughout the state of Utah and enjoyed exploring and hiking the vast landscape our beautiful state has to offer.
Bob was an exceptionally well-read, inquisitive, and well-rounded lifelong learner. He stayed active for many years running, playing racquetball, and hiking in the great outdoors. He was also an amazing cook who loved sharing his culinary talents with family and friends. Whether he was smoking and grilling meats, baking sourdough bread, or perfecting rolls and Dutch oven cooking, everything he made was absolutely delicious.
Bob loved Jan and his kids fiercely. As the kids grew up and ran in their own directions, he was always right there to support their choices. A faithful member of the Bountiful 18th Ward, Bob served dedicatedly in many callings, including Scouting, Young Men, Elders Quorum, Sunday School Teacher, and High Priest Group Leader. He held a deep love for LDS history and was a voracious reader of all types of books, always researching and sharing his findings. Bob was an incredible example to everyone who knew him—defending his country's freedoms and remaining entirely devoted to his wife, family, community, and faith throughout his life. He will be sorely missed.
Bob is survived by his beloved wife, Jeanne Ann (Jan) Lowe; his children, John (Tori) Lowe, Grant (Betty) Lowe, Bryn (Rich Moore) Whipple, Sunny (Nathan) Johnson, Vance (Shelly) Lowe, and Spencer (Kellie) Lowe; 26 grandchildren; and 8 great-grandchildren, with 2 more on the way. He is also survived by his sisters and their husbands, Judy (Larry) Herrbach and Karen (Jim) Hill; sister-in-law, Susan Lowe; and sister- and brother-in-law, Toni (DeLoss) Christensen. He was preceded in death by his parents, Linden and Una Lowe; and his brothers, Richard, Michael, and Lindy. Bob leaves behind a beautiful legacy of love, kindness, and charity.
