Robert Ben Smith

On July 19,2026, at the peaceful home of his sweet stepdaughter, Tonya Plucker (Derek) and surrounded by his loving and completely devoted spouse, Kathy Poindexter, Robert allowed himself to peacefully “let go” of this life and loved ones and join so many of his great friends and family members on an unknown adventure, on the other side.

Born May 29th, 1938, to Mildred Hatch Smith and Joseph Benjamin Smith of Centerville, Utah. Bob, as he was often called early in his life, married his high school sweetheart, Nancy Marquiss, raising 4 children, Becky (Grant), Ben (Vickie), Bob, and Beth (Scott), later divorced after 26 years, then finding the absolute, love of his life, Kathy Poindexter, with whom he would happily spend the next 47 years of his life. They were always together, supporting each other through good and bad times, moves, job changes and fun life hobbies. Robert has 12 Grandchildren and 13 Great-Grandchildren and of course, these numbers don’t include our many canine siblings, “Killer and Coco”, most recently.

Robert “Bob” was an expert brick mason for many decades, working for his Dads’ company, then later with his brother, Jack Smith and brick buddy, Denny White, in their own company. Being in such a hard and grueling profession required lots of strength, which his love for heavy weightlifting and strength training, certainly helped. He would show us his large biceps and tell us that he bench-pressed 500lbs! He had a quick wit, was a tease and seemed to have a bit of an ego, often saying, he was the “Toughest and Strongest Man in the Valley”, he would also say, as an added bonus, he just so happened to be the “Bravest and the Best-Looking man!” He did have his own weight gym and taught many local boys, friends and his own kids the art of lifting, all while surrounded by some rather “questionable” wallpaper!

He enjoyed the art of playing Chess, had a natural artist talent for drawing and carving wood, good with a bull whip, (watch out Indiana Jones!), loved riding his horses, training and hunting with his dogs, was a Bouncer and a Bar Tender, a true “Jack of All Trades”, but was truly a master of many! He was an avid sportsman. He was a deer, elk, duck and pheasant hunter, priding himself on bagging the biggest elk and had the antlers to prove it. He loved to fish the lakes and streams of Utah, often taking his family and kids and teaching them the “Hows” of the sport. These outings often included many of his great friends, of great humor and personalities, creating vast amounts of wonderful memories for us all. He bowled and played billiards, played Bingo and Poker in leagues or tournaments, winning many trophies doing so. He loved to camp in the beauty of the Utah mountains, sitting beside waters of its reservoirs and the quiet, simple beauty of the deserts of Scenic, Arizona and Mesquite, Nevada, where he chose to live and enjoy the later part of his years.

He was an amazing man and a character, to say the least. The stories and details so rich and entertaining, you will need to come and attend his Celebration of Life, to get the whole story.

We would love for you to come honor Robert and share your love, memories, smiles, laughter and great stories with Kathy and all of his family members at a casual dress open house Luncheon-Celebration of Life, on Wednesday, September 2, 2026, from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. at the home of his oldest son, Ben and his wife, Vickie Smith, 1311 Hidden Quail Cove, Farmington, Utah.
