Richard Peter Tonnesen, (Dick) beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend, passed away peacefully on April 12, 2026, at the age of 95. He was born on July 25, 1930, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Peter and Laura Tonnesen.

Richard grew up in Salt Lake City, Utah, as the youngest of five siblings. As a child he grew a love for woodworking from his Father which he used to share his passion by making various wood creations for his family.

Richard graduated from East High School in 1948, after High School he joined the Navy where he did his training on the USS Thomas which later inspired grandson Jaydon who is currently serving in the Navy. A proud veteran, Richard served his country honorably and developed his lifelong career as an electrician.

Richard met the love of his life, Erma, at a rolling skating rink where they skated competitively and received awards.

They married on May 21, 1952, and moved to Bountiful in 1959, where they started a family shortly after. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake Temple on September 17, 1977, a commitment that reflected their deep faith and devotion to one another. Together they built a life centered on family, service, and enduring love.

Richard enjoyed camping with his family at Wasatch State Park, rafting down the green river and playing golf. While retired Richard and Erma traveled the U.S. in their RV, went on cruises to Alaska, Hawaii and cruised through the Panama Canal.

A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Richard served diligently in many callings over the years. His testimony was evident in the way he lived—quietly, humbly, and with unwavering dedication to his faith and community.

Dick is survived by his wife of 74 years, Erma, children Pam (John) Sessions, and Troy (Tammy) Tonnesen. Richard cherished his grandchildren Ryan, Cody (Erin) Brady, Whitney (Kevin), Jaydon and Sydney. Great-grandchildren Julian, Oliver and Maylah.
