Richard Larry Johnston, son of Edward Larry and Sandra Clawson Johnston, passed away unexpectedly on July 11, 2025 following surgery in May to remove a brain tumor. Richard was born in Fort Worth, Texas. He lived in Sacramento, California; Tucson, Arizona; Kearns, Utah; and Kaysville, Utah. Richard graduated from Kearns High School where he was involved in choir and orchestra.
Richard served a mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Milan, Italy from 1976 to 1978. He attended BYU in Provo but graduated from Weber State College in 1989 in computer science.
Richard married Susan Hilton in the Salt Lake Temple on June 8, 1984. They were blessed with five healthy children and one stillborn daughter. Richard loved stargazing and spent happy times with a telescope peering out at the beauties of the cosmos. He was a fan of the manned space program and watched nearly every launch and every splashdown regardless of the time of day. He loved music, a love he got from his dear mother, who was a superb pianist. He had a beautiful singing voice and often sang with his siblings around the piano.
Richard is survived by his wife, Susan, children Benjamin, Rebecca (Cameron), Steven (Rebecca), Daniel, and Timothy, grandchildren Samuel, Katie, Truman, Aubrey, Margaret and Meredith as well as siblings Sheri (Michael) Anderson, Heidi (Gary) Waldrop, John (Kris), Rodney (Teresa), Paul (Connie), Wendi (David) Prentice, Kelli (Franklin) Chavez, Jenni (Kent) Shelton, Charles (Heather), Merri (Ellis) Rygg, and Mark (Becky) Blaisdell. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers: Michael (Betty Jean), and Robert.
Funeral Services will be held Thursday July 17th at 10:00 am at the Kaysville 13th Ward, 875 E. 200 N. Kaysville, Utah. There will be a viewing Wednesday July 16th from 6-8 pm at Russon Mortuary in Farmington, 1941 N, Main Street Farmington, Utah. There will also be a viewing prior to the service at the church from 9:00-9:45 Thursday morning. Interment will be at the Kaysville Cemetery.
