1932 Reed 2022

Reed Lynn Martineau

April 13, 1932 — October 21, 2022

Salt Lake City, UT

Reed Lynn Martineau, aged 90, passed away peacefully while holding the hand of his loving wife on Friday, October 21, 2022. He was born on April 13, 1932, in Colonia Juarez, Chihuahua, Mexico to Leland Knowlton and Irene Brown Martineau. He is well-remembered as a successful lawyer, devoted family man, and passionate farmer.

After graduating with a B.S. from Brigham Young University, Reed earned a J.D. degree from the University of Utah in 1961, where he was editor-in-chief of the Utah Law Review. He became a senior partner of the Snow, Christensen, and Martineau law firm in Salt Lake City, and served as President of the Salt Lake County Bar, Utah State Bar, and Western States Bar Associations. In addition, he served as Commissioner on the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws for over 25 years.

As a 1st Lieutenant in the U.S. Air Force, Reed served along with his twin brother, Ray, as an intelligence officer during the Korean War. He was a lifelong member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, holding many positions of service and leadership.

Over their 67 years of marriage, Reed was endlessly supported by the love of his life, Gloria Johnson Martineau. They raised 5 wonderful children together and were consistently involved in the lives of their 24 grandchildren and 35 great-grandchildren. “Papa Martineau” had a special way with kids, making each feel that they were the most important thing in his world.

Reed was deeply productive and had an uncanny ability to fix almost anything, mechanical or otherwise. These qualities came in handy on his beloved Oakcreek Farm, which he and Gloria expanded and vastly improved over the last 44 years. Along with spending time at the farm, other cherished family traditions have been built around Lake Powell, Easter at The Rocks, hunting, and Christmas gatherings.

Reed Lynn Martineau is survived by his devoted wife Gloria Martineau; one sister and three brothers: Catherine (Vern Merrill), Ray (Shirlene), Kent (Sheryl), and Bill (Ginny); five children: Debbi Gibbons, Wade Martineau, Celinda (John) Jackson, Michael (Holly) Martineau, and Brent (Maegen) Martineau; as well as numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 28, 2022, at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel, 2080 E. 5165 S., Holladay, UT 84117.  A viewing will be held on Thursday evening from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Russon Mortuary, 295 N Main St, Bountiful, UT 84010 and Friday morning from 9:30-10:30 a.m. at the church prior to services.
