Ray W. Moore

November 16, 1936 — January 27, 2024

Bountiful, Utah

Dr. Ray W. Moore, a loving son, brother, father, and grandfather, and respected scholar of choral music, passed away peacefully on January 27, 2024, at the age of 87.

Ray was born on November 16, 1936, in Muleshoe, Texas, to Ray C. Moore and Melba Watson. His early love and talent in music became the driver for his education, and he graduated from Texas Tech University with a bachelor's degree in vocal performance. He then earned his master's and doctoral degrees in choral conducting at Columbia University, where he later taught as Associate Professor. He later joined the faculties of Lamar University, University of Houston, and the University of Arkansas – Little Rock (UALR). He retired from UALR as Director of Choral Studies and Professor Emeritus in 2007 but remained in the local music community. He produced the regular series “Notes on Music” which was broadcast on the local NPR classical music station for many years of his retirement. This became the basis for his book “High Notes and Low”, published in 2012.

Ray was widely admired for his musical excellence, scholarly rigor, and inspirational leadership. He conducted numerous performances of major choral works over the years, including as director of the Bay Area Chorus (1974-1988), one of the largest community choirs in the nation. Dr. Moore was also honored to tour with the USO, bringing musical performances to US Military troops in more than a dozen countries. He also published many articles on choral literature, history, and pedagogy, and mentored many students who became successful choral conductors and educators themselves.

Ray was a devoted son, father, grandfather, and friend. He is survived by his five children, Christopher (Melinda), Jason (Emily), Matthew, Sarah, and Joshua, and his four grandchildren, Adam, Meghan, Abigail, and Alexander. He also leaves behind many relatives, colleagues, students, caretakers, and admirers who will miss him dearly.

A memorial service will be held on February 10, 2024, at 2 p.m., at Russon Mortuary, 295 North Main Street, Bountiful, UT; his final resting place will be near his parents and other family at Resthaven Memorial Park in Lubbock, Texas.
