Norman Earl Stauffer Jr., 86, of Bountiful Utah passed away at home on December 7, 2024 due to causes incident to age. He was born in Providence, Utah on October 2, 1938 to Carrie Ruth Clawson and Norman Earl Stauffer. He had a younger brother who survived one day. He was raised on a dairy farm in Providence, Utah, graduated from South Cache High School in 1956 and received a B.S. Degree in Civil Engineering from Utah State University in 1960. Norm was a member of the Intercollegiate Knights, Phi Kappa Phi and Sigma Tau at USU.
He married his college sweetheart, Jaleen Harris of Tremonton, Utah, on August 3, 1960 in the Logan Temple. They had 3 children, Carrie, Rodney, and Jeffrey. Rodney died at the age of 12 after being treated for a rare form of cancer. Jaleen died on January 3, 2010. Norm married Shirley Smith Calder from Rexburg, Idaho on June 30, 2011 for time in the Bountiful Temple. They lived in Rexburg, ID and Bountiful, UT.
In addition to his undergrad work, Norm earned a PhD in civil engineering with a major in fluid mechanics at USU with a minor in applied statistics. Beginning in 1963, Norm worked for Boeing in Seattle and Huntsville on a boost guide vehicle (the Dinosaur Project), a computer simulation of the F-1 and J-2 Engines for the Saturn-Apollo Vehicle, an Apollo Simulator used for astronaut training, and aircraft landing gear systems.
In 1970 his family moved to Bountiful, Utah where he accepted employment with the State of Utah Division of Water Resources managing the Hydrology and Computer Applications Section and the state's Clouding Program. He was a member of the Bear River Commission Technical Advisory Committee, developed computer simulations of river basin systems and the Great Salt Lake, and performed various studies including flood hydrology for new dams and to upgrade existing dams.
He was an adjunct professor of Civil Engineering at Montana State for one year, at Utah State University for 13 years and at the University of Utah for 3 years. He also did private consulting work.
After retirement in 2001, Norm served a 2 1/2 year mission as a Water Resources Engineer for his Church and volunteered for another 7 years. Norm was a Registered Professional Engineer, held a private pilot license with an instrument rating, and an amateur radio license KD7OGP.
Norm was a lifelong active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He loved scouting. He attended the BSA National Jamboree in Irving Ranch, California as a youth in 1953. He served as an assistant Scout Master, a Scout Master and a Cub Master.
While growing up, in addition to his farming chores, he took piano and organ lessons. He and his wife Jaleen played piano and organ duets at many church services. Norm's main hobby was flying. He owned his own airplane, a Piper Archer N6206J. He was a member of the Civil Air Patrol Utah Wing for 45 years where he served as a Mission Pilot, Mission Observer, Airborne Photographer, and Finance Officer. Norm's other hobbies included camping with his family, hunting, fishing and horseback riding.
Norm will be buried in the Bountiful City Cemetery next to his wife Jaleen and son Rodney. His funeral arrangements are handled by Russon Mortuary.
The service will be Friday, December 13, 2024, at 11 a.m. at the Stone Creek Ward building, 1476 N. 300 W., Bountiful, Utah, where a viewing will be held Friday morning from 9:45 – 10:45 a.m. prior to services.
