She was born in Dordrecht, Holland, The Netherlands on August 5, 1943, to Daniel and Neeltje Straatman. She and her family emigrated to the United States in 1951. Her family settled in Utah and were faithful members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. They were blessed to have Thomas S. Monson as their Bishop.

In her early years of marriage, she enjoyed driving Mel's fast, red El Camino around while he was at work. A couple of times the sheriff went to Mel's workplace to tell him he would catch up to him sooner or later, but it was Lee who was racing his car around town.
She had many interests and loved boating and water skiing with the family, fishing, hunting, camping, riding motorcycles and UTV's. She held an extended family breakfast every year on Independence Day and was thrilled any time the whole family would come over for dinner.Lee enjoyed working for several doctors during her career.
Lee had a great capacity to love and always saw the good in people. She loved the gospel and loved the Church. She was called to many positions during her life where she served faithfully.
