Mollie Jeanne Monroe Shaffer

November 15, 1936 — November 5, 2023

Mollie Jeanne Monroe Shaffer passed away the afternoon of Sunday, November 5th, 2023, just ten days before her 87th birthday.
Mollie was born on November 15, 1936 in Portland, Oregon to Mayer Green Monroe and May Fan Vurpillat Monroe. She was the oldest of three children, with two brothers, Phillip and Donald.
After graduating from Grant High School, she attended the University of Oregon to earn a degree in journalism, which she dreamed would lead to a job opportunity in New York where she would live in an apartment, unmarried, with multiple cats. This master plan was sidetracked when she met John Bernard Shaffer at a sorority party.
Mollie and John were married on June 29, 1957 and had three children-Patricia, Judy, and Mark. They lived and raised their family in Bountiful for over 50 years.
Mollie's life took a profound turn when she joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1966. Mollie gave all she had to both her family and the Church. She put all her talents and skills into her Church assignments and was even called to serve on two general boards-the Young Women's General Board and the General Church Activities Committee. Whatever she was involved with, she always made time for her family; nobody put more effort into Family Home evening lessons than Mollie!
Mollie had a variety of hobbies and interests over the years in addition to writing. She loved listening to opera-especially the singer Maria Callas. In addition to collecting opera memorabilia, Mollie collected antiques, specializing in dolls and doll paraphernalia. She also created dramatic, fashionable necklaces. She developed this talent later in life but was extremely prolific. She loved giving one of a kind gifts to her friends and family.
Mollie's unwavering faith in God and love of her family were her defining characteristics. She is survived by her husband, John, her three children, twelve grandchildren, and 3 great-grandchildren (with two more on the way).
A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. on November 15th at the Bountiful 13th Ward, 1365 North 650 East, Bountiful, Utah.
