Michiko “Miko” Tanaka Nicholas, 82, passed away peacefully on June 16, 2026, in West Jordan, Utah. She was born on March 8, 1944, in Gifu, Japan.
Miko was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and found strength, comfort, peace, and purpose in her faith throughout her life. She was a student of the scriptures and loved to study them.
Miko found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved collecting frogs, crocheting, painting, recording family memories, and sharing stories of the people and experiences she held dear.
She possessed a curious mind and a grateful heart, finding happiness in everyday moments and in those who shared their time with her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Kazu Yamada and Torakichi Tanaka, and by her loving husband, Verdun Leslie Nicholas.
She is survived by her three sons from a previous marriage, as well as other extended family members residing in Japan.
She is also survived by members of Verdun’s family, including his niece, Ronda Ewing, who lovingly watched over and cared for her needs during these past few years.
Miko will be remembered for her warmth, gentle spirit, quiet determination, devotion to her faith, and the unwavering love she had for those around her. She had a phrase she often used which was “very happy” and we are certain that she is indeed “very happy” to be reunited with her loved ones on the other side of the veil.
Our family would like to express heartfelt gratitude to Heather Reeves, the many caregivers at Sunridge Assisted Living, Benson & Angie with Symbii Hospice, and Julie Byland for the care, compassion, love, and joy they brought to Miko during the last years of her life.
We also extend our sincere appreciation to Shannon Warenski with Russon Mortuary and Jackie Hubbard with Kaysville Cemetery for their kindness, professionalism, and exceptional support during this difficult time.
We thank the many friends in her Japanese ward who loved her unconditionally and served her faithfully for many years. There truly are angels on earth, and Miko was deeply grateful for each of you.
A graveside service & dedication of the grave will take place on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, at 7:00 p.m. at Kaysville Cemetery, 425 E Crestwood Rd, Kaysville, Utah.
