Melvin Nicolas Bangerter

Apr 14, 1932 — Oct 23, 2026

Bountiful, UT

Melvin Nicolas Bangerter passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on October 23, 2026, surrounded by his family at the age of 94. A beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, Melvin leaves behind a legacy of faith, hard work, service, and unconditional love. His family finds comfort in knowing he has been reunited with his Heavenly Father, his parents, and his brothers and sisters who preceded him in death.

Born on April 14, 1932, in Salt Lake City, Utah, Melvin was the youngest of nine children born to Alfred and Anna Bangerter. He grew up in Bountiful, Utah, where he spent much of his childhood helping his parents on the family farm. He often shared stories of working alongside his father, growing and selling watermelons, cantaloupe, onions, and other produce at markets in Salt Lake City. Those early experiences instilled in him a lifelong love of farming and gardening, as well as the values of hard work, self-sufficiency, and service that he would later pass on to his own family.

Throughout his life, Melvin continued to cultivate the land he loved. He maintained apple and peach orchards in Utah County, grew grain, and worked in the family garden in West Bountiful until his passing. His dedication to his work was matched only by his devotion to his family. Nothing brought him greater joy than spending time with those he loved, and he treasured the opportunities to travel with his children and their families for as long as his health allowed.

After graduating from Davis High School in 1950, Melvin enlisted in the United States Air Force. He proudly served during the Korean War, with assignments in California and Iceland. Following his military service, he attended the University of Utah, where he earned a degree in accounting. He later devoted much of his professional career to the Davis County School District, working in the district offices.

In 1962, Melvin met Shirley Thompson, and four years later, they were married for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Their 60 years together were filled with love, faith, and a shared commitment to family and service.

A devoted disciple of Jesus Christ, Melvin spent his life serving his Savior and those around him. He served two missions for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints: first in the Swiss-Austria Mission and later in the Honolulu, Hawaii Mission alongside his beloved wife. He also dedicated his time to serving in the Bountiful Utah Temple, the Salt Lake Temple, and South Davis Hospital.

Above all, Melvin was a family man. He led by example, teaching his children and grandchildren the importance of kindness, humility, service, and an unwavering faith in Jesus Christ. He had a remarkable ability to make others feel loved and valued, extending genuine warmth and Christlike compassion to everyone he met. Those who knew him will remember his gentle nature, generous heart, and the unconditional love he so freely gave.

Melvin is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Shirley Thompson Bangerter; their daughters, Ann (Dennis), Julie (Shane), and Carolyn (Jay); 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Anna; his siblings, Vernon, Lilyan, Anna, Hazel, Josephine, Joe, Le Grande, and Norene; and his son-in-law, Steven Baker.

The family wishes to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dignity Home Health and Hospice for the compassionate care and kindness they provided.
