Marie Ethel Standing

December 8, 1921 — May 8, 2024

Woods Cross UT

Marie Ethel Standing, our beloved mom, grandma, great-grandma, and friend passed away on May 8, 2024, at the young age of 102 years and 5 months. Marie was born December 8, 1921, in Ogden, Utah, to Ethel Maud Waterfall and William McKinley Hoggan. Her parents divorced shortly after her birth. She was raised by her Grandparents James Morgan Waterfall and Harriet Ellen Sellers Waterfall until her mother married Samuel Paul Larsen and the family moved to California.

Marie returned to Utah in high school where she was in the first graduating class from Ogden High School. Marie then enrolled in Weber College. While there, she met and then married Barclay Jack Standing on November 5, 1942. Jack was drafted into the U.S. Army the following month and Marie followed him first to Blythe, California, and then to Wheaton, Illinois, before Jack was sent to Italy. Their son Paul was born in 1944 while Jack was gone. They were later joined by a daughter Carolyn (1947) and a son Donald (1952). They made their home all over Utah, living in over 20 homes together before settling in Woods Cross.

Marie had a strong testimony of the Restored Gospel of Jesus Christ and freely shared her testimony with everyone. Marie served in many callings but loved Family History and she spent many hours searching for family. Later in life, she was able to reconnect with the Hoggan side of her family.

Marie loved to sew and crochet. Her grandchildren treasure things grandma made for them. All of her children and grandchildren have a blanket she crocheted. Up until the time of her death, Marie continued to crochet small blankets that her granddaughter, Catherine, brought to the babies in the NICU at Primary Children’s Hospital.

Christmas wasn’t Christmas until her family received the gingerbread cookies, she and Jack lovingly made for them every year. As they aged, they taught some of their grandchildren the family’s secret recipe so the tradition could be carried on. Another favorite thing Marie was known for was her holiday cards. Every holiday Marie sent out a card to every child, grandchild, and great-grandchild with one dollar in it. It meant everything to them. They never missed an important event in their grandkids’ lives. Family was everything to her.

She was a member of the Woods Cross 12th Ward for decades and had many friends in the area. These friends have been such a blessing in her life. After she lost Jack, these friends helped her to stay in her own home. She belonged to a family home evening group that kept her social and loved. Her incredible ministering couple have been angels in grandma’s life and supported her in so many ways. As a family, we are so grateful for all of them.

Marie lost her eternal companion of 73 years in December of 2015. Marie is survived by her three children, Paul B (Bev) Standing, Carolyn Webb, and Don J (Cathy) Standing. She had 10 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren. Marie was a favorite of all. When you married into Marie’s family you were treated as family. She was also a collector of friends who became family. As such, she had many other siblings, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren who will miss her greatly.

Marie was preceded in death by her eternal companion, Jack, and a beloved son-in-law James R Webb.
