1940 Larry 2023

Loren Elsman Landward

August 9, 1940 — September 18, 2023

Loren Elsman Landward, known by his friends as Larry, passed away on September 18, 2023 from conditions common to old age.
Larry was born in Oakland, California, in 1940.  His brave birth mother, Helen Metz, gave him for adoption as an infant, and he was raised by loving parents, Ernest and Esther Landward.  He spent his formative years in Stockton, California, and his high school years on a farm near Ceres, California.  There he learned the value of hard work and gained a life-long love for the land and agriculture. Following high school, he enrolled at Brigham Young University and at age 20 served a two and a half year mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Netherlands and Belgium.
After graduating from BYU and earning a Master's Degree from the University of Utah, Larry spent his working career serving people. He was an advocate of education, helping countless people in choosing and preparing for meaningful and rewarding careers.  He believed strongly in the notion of collaboration, cooperation and consensus. He taught that education and enthusiasm for your work were appropriate tools for success and happiness.
Larry loved the road less travelled, and was a constant aggravator to his beloved wife Carolyn as he usually chose the "scenic route" to travel, either on road trips with the family, or simply going to the store on an errand. He was always interested in the vistas of life: landscapes, birds and animals, architecture, flowers, mountains and valleys, and the seashore.  He loved to tease everyone, and usually received as good as he gave.  He was the subject of huge gales of family laughter for his bumbling and minor misfortunes, and he loved to laugh.  He was proud beyond reason of his wife and children.  He rarely argued, except to play devil's advocate and stir up discussion.
He enjoyed the gospel of Jesus Christ, and served in many callings in his church.  He encouraged others to find joy in their church, regardless of denomination. He was not perfect in any sense of the word, but he tried to be a good man.  He learned, he loved, he laughed and he cared.  He cared for others, he cared for his clients, his students, his friends and associates, and most importantly, he cared for his family.  He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, and their children David, Jennifer, Geoffrey and Michael, their families, and his sister, Monica.
