Laura Ann Morris Colvin passed away peacefully on the morning of June 5, 2024, after a prolonged battle with Alzheimer’s disease.
Laura was born in Pueblo, Colorado to William and Genevieve Morris. The oldest of 10 children, Laura cultivated a love of both cooking and hard work in her father’s bakery, Bill’s Sweet Shop. She often spoke fondly of waking up in the early hours of the morning to go work at the bakery before school and returning after school to help behind the register. Laura graduated from Pueblo’s South High School in 1965.
After high school, Laura settled in Canon City Colorado, where she became a medical assistant to Dr. Henry Greybow and, most importantly, became a mom to Bridget Beth and Michael Benjamin Colvin. After her marriage ended in 1979, she made two crucial decisions that would shape her family’s lives. She decided to attend college, enrolling in the University of Southern Colorado’s nursing program, and, most importantly, she became a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
While attending the University of Southern Colorado, Laura had the opportunity to enroll in the Physician Assistant’s graduate program at the University of Utah. In fact, she was one of the first female graduates of the PA program and would later serve as the President of the Utah Physician Assistants Association. After graduation, Laura and her family would settle in Kaysville, Utah where she would spend the next 30+ years working as a PA for both FHP and Ogden Clinic, gaining additional certifications in allergy and colposcopy that enabled her to help countless individuals lead healthier lives. She also served as a clinical professor at the University of Utah’s Physician Assistant Program for many years.
Outside of work, Laura was an avid gardener, training as a Master Gardener at Utah State University’s Kaysville extension. When she wasn’t working, you would often find Laura tending to her beloved garden full of vegetables, fruits, and beautiful English Roses. She was also a historian, with a deep love of American history. Every summer, she would travel to historical sites across the country, often dragging her teenaged children along for the ride. With characteristic tenacity, she would win that battle as well, instilling a love of history in her children as they became adults.
Laura’s crowning achievement beyond all the professional and personal accomplishments was her family. She loved her family and made many sacrifices to give her son and daughter a better life. Seeing her children achieve their ambitions gave her more joy than anything else in her life and she reveled in hearing her children’s updates and, even better, bragging about her children to anyone who would listen. A two-time cancer survivor, Laura often said that her Heavenly Father preserved her so that she could meet her children’s spouses and her grandchildren. She had a special relationship with each of her grandchildren that they will cherish as they grow older.
Laura was a devout member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, serving in many callings as well as a church service mission at the Family History Center. Her work documenting her family’s genealogy and helping do the work of that family after they passed blessed her family’s lives in immeasurable ways.
Laura was preceded in death by her parents Bill and Geneiveve, as well as her brother Daniel Morris. She is survived by her daughter, Bridget Beth Jensen (John) and her son, Michael Benjamin (Jennifer) and 7 grandchildren, Jacob, Sarah, Ian, Emma, Grace, Charlie and Gabriel. Also, by her 8 siblings, Tom, Pete, Marylin, Bob, Jennifer, Claudia, Brian and Cecilia.
