Larry Roy Elkins

October 3, 1942 — January 14, 2022

Larry Roy Elkins, oldest child of Roy Miller and Viola Marjorie Jorgenson Elkins, was born on October 3rd, 1942, in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was joined shortly by brother, Ronald and then given the greatest gift on Christmas of 1947, his pride and joy, a baby sister – Shari.

Raised in Holladay, he attended Granite High and then transferred as the first graduating class of Olympus High in 1960, where he reveled in his dropped flat black Ford . Although left completely deaf in one ear by childhood measles, he had a passion for music. His beautiful voice served as a Tenor for the Jay Welch Corral. He extended his schooling as a proud member of a fraternity at the University of Utah and then transferred to Utah State University, where he became a forever “Aggie”, while also an avid fan with his sons of Brigham Young football under the coaching of Lavell Edwards, his former drivers ed teacher.

Called to serve in the land of his heritage, Larry carried out a two-and-a-half-year mission in Oslo, Norway. Destiny followed him there, introducing him to a mission companion, Merrill Bailey, who would change his future. Upon his return to Utah and in the fall of 1965, Larry met his eternal companion, Linda Lee Bailey. He would say “they met in September, that day to remember, a love that has lasted for over 45 years”. Their first date was a double-blind date with his beloved mission companion and one another’s little sisters at the Heidelberg in Farmington, Utah. At the end, both knowing they had just met their future in-laws and forever friends. Soon after, the two were sealed for time and eternity in the Mesa Temple, on April 2, 1966, and were given the “marvelous blessings pertaining to celestial glory and exaltation and to feel the magnitude of joy in their posterity”. Blessed and survived by their adoring seven children, Vaughn (Kristin), Jennifer, Darren (Siri), Todd (Emily), Chad (Krystal), Tauna (Jeremy), and Anissa Elkins, as well as 27 grandchildren (and 5 of their spouses- all treasured as his own), and 4 great-grandchildren. His love for each was expressed and personalized to each individually. Never missing a game, special event, or time of need, he left each feeling ‘like his favorite’.

Example of his love and service can be found in the beautiful elaborate dollhouse built for Linda, long after her passing. He says the marriage started as a “fairy tale” and ended as a “fairy tale”. Article can be found sharing his desire to continue to serve by visiting https://www.ksl.com/article/46523043/farmington-man-sells-dollhouse-made-in-late-wifes-honor-to-cover-medical-bills, leaving even the reporter and photographer in tears with his impactful story of eternal love and sacrifice.

A natural born entrepreneur, his life included a diverse work history with expansive knowledge and experience in all aspects of company management, business development, farming and ranching, investing, electrical, sales, and transportation. Nothing he couldn’t fix, especially broken hearts needing mending or counsel.

Above all, his love for his children and grandchildren were his ‘reason’ and where he dedicated his time and energy in loving with ‘all that he was and had’.  In any remaining time, Larry also had a love and need for the open road. Often where he found his greatest refuge and “wind-therapy”, whether that be behind the wheel of his car, or on his numerous Goldwing motorcycles throughout the years. He would share it was where he had his greatest conversations with his Creator and Brother.

Humbly blessing others with his testimony and many “Larryism” of wise words of wit and wisdom. His life was certainly not short of obstacles and challenges, yet he took each trial head on. Being a man firm in his faith, with “wisdom and in a knowledge of the truth” and great love for his Savior, with a powerful testimony of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, and unwavering dedication to his family. When given cancer as his final challenge, he addressed it as he always did, with a smile, refusing to quit. In his final years, his battle with pancreatic cancer was faced like all others, refusing to let it conquer his spirit. Never giving up, he took all measurements to gain as much quality and quantity time with family and close special friends in the end.

With a heart full of gratitude for the Huntsman care team, especially Dr. Garrido, nurse Kristen & Lauren, and the entire team, Larry always vocalized his appreciation and respect of their hardworking studies and dedication to cancer research.

On January 14th, encircled by his children, Larry was reunited with his eternal bride and welcomed by all those before him, anxiously awaiting his return. Free of pain, full of peace, and with great anticipation and joy, he will share in the eternities and provide continuous guidance and counsel to his legacy on this side of the veil.

Ability to smile and find humor in every situation. He will be forever known and remembered by his “Larryisms”, providing humor and laughter at life, all with an incredible gift of making others smile and feel seen and genuinely cared for.

His children ask that you come celebrate and share in the joy he gave others at a funeral held in his honor on Friday, January 28th at the Rock Chapel, 272 N. Main St., Farmington, Utah. Family visitation will be held from 9:45-10:45 am with the funeral services at 11:00 am and following burial services at the Farmington City Cemetery to be laid to rest next to his forever companion.
