Life Sketch

LaMont Vern Fowler, our dear, sweet, humble father passed away January 3, 2026. It just wasn’t heaven without Mom, so he came back on January 7, 2026 for his bride of 72 years, our dear, sweet (and a little bit sassy) mother, Lorene Adkins Fowler. You could almost hear Dad say “Heyyy Lorene! We’d better go—these people might want to go home!” When they left this earth, they were surrounded by their family who love and adore them.

Mom and Dad were born in humble circumstances. He on a farm in Idaho; she in the hills of Kentucky. Mom is the 6th child of 9—7 girls and 2 boys. She was born 15 minutes after her twin sister, Pauline. Dad always said, “I came from a large family. I have four sisters, and they each have a brother!” then leave you to do the math.

The Fowler family moved from Idaho to Ogden, Utah when Dad was 13 years old. He graduated from Ogden High School in 1949, and he was a Seminary graduate.

Mom graduated from Lewis County High School in Vanceburg, Kentucky in 1950. There was a graduating class of 47 students. She earned a teaching certificate from Morehead State Teachers’ College. She taught in a one-room schoolhouse for a short time before illness put her into a tuberculosis hospital for 13 months.

Dad served as a missionary for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the Eastern States Mission from 1951 to 1953. He really loved talking about his mission experiences, especially about how he met Mom and the events that preceded that meeting. Heaven brought them together, and they were married December 11, 1953 for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple.

On their first anniversary, Dad began the tradition of giving Mom one red rose for each year of marriage. The house was filled with red roses each December on their wedding anniversary.

Dad enjoyed Dutch oven cooking, building things, gardening (with precision), doing the Harlan County Shuffle (or Polka, depending on who you ask), telling stories, and teaching his children piano lessons. Dad had a fun-loving sense of humor. He always had a “dad joke” at the ready and took great delight in practicing jump-scare tactics on his kids.

Mom was an accomplished seamstress. She sewed clothing for her family and doll clothes for her little girls. She crocheted baby blessing clothes for some of her grandchildren. She was an excellent cook and taught her children how to make REAL Kentucky fried chicken, soup beans, cornbread, biscuits and gravy, grape jelly, and the best pie you’ve ever eaten.

Dad and Mom were kind and, thankfully, patient parents. Even if we were in trouble, we knew we were loved. Their children and grandchildren have wonderful memories of family vacations to church history and American history sites, Cheerio Lodge, Kentucky, Idaho, backyard sleepovers, Dutch oven cookouts, family birthday parties, and sitting on the porch swing. Each grandchild was “Grandma’s Angel” and was always loaded up with Oreos, “chocolate juice”, and little paper cups of dry-roasted peanuts.

Dad earned an Associate of Science degree from Weber College and graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Utah. His career included setting up and maintaining computer data processing systems for Mountain Fuel Supply Company and Utah-Idaho Sugar Company. He was the Director of County Information Systems for Davis County

While raising six children (with only one bathroom), Mom graduated from the BYU School of Nursing and worked for 25 years as a Registered Nurse spending 12 years at Lakeview Hospital. While at Lakeview she was the charge nurse on the medical-surgical floor. Later she was the house supervisor. She said that she loved bedside nursing because she was “doing something for somebody else that they couldn’t do for themselves”.

After they retired, Dad and Mom served together for 18 months in the Brazil Sao Paulo South Mission where they traveled throughout 13 missions teaching the missionaries about proper hygiene. Mom created a program of preventative medicine to keep the missionaries well, rather than treating them after they were ill. Dad excelled in learning Portuguese and was blessed to be a leader and administrator. After their mission, Dad often referred to Mom as his senior companion.

Dad and Mom served in many church callings. Dad served as Bishop of the Bountiful 39th Ward and as Stake Clerk in the Bountiful Utah South Stake. He was a gifted teacher and speaker. He taught early morning seminary classes. Mom served in Young Women, Relief Society and Family History callings.

They loved doing family history and temple work. They were ordinance workers in the Bountiful Temple. Dad served as a group leader and tour guide on Temple Square for 11 years.

Dad and Mom lived with a focus on serving others--whether it was as small as taking a loaf of homemade bread to a sick neighbor, tilling the garden of a friend, or sharing their testimonies, their Christ-like examples touched many lives. They were dedicated to living and sharing the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

15 And if it so be that you should labor all your days … and bring, save it be one soul unto me, how great shall be your joy with him in the kingdom of my Father!

16 And now, if your joy will be great with one soul that you have brought unto me into the kingdom of my Father, how great will be your joy if you should bring many souls unto me!
