Kathryn "Kaye" Campbell Richins passed away on July 20, 2025, in her home, surrounded by her loving family. While we will miss her dearly, we take comfort in knowing she is at peace and that her reunion on the other side of the veil was undoubtedly a joyful one.
Kaye was the oldest of six children born to Frank Robertson Campbell and Vyrna Hanson Campbell on May 20, 1944. She spent her early years in Salt Lake City before moving with her family to Bountiful at age 14. She began her ninth-grade year at Bountiful High and graduated with the Class of 1962.Mom was known for her determination, tireless work ethic, beautiful hair and eyelashes, and her quirky, funny sayings. She could never pass up a bargain or a good sale. An incredibly gifted pianist, she practiced daily, constantly striving to improve. Her music was a gift that filled our home, one we didn't fully realize the value of until now. We will deeply miss hearing her play.
At Bountiful High, she accompanied the choir for all four years and spent countless hours accompanying vocalists and serving as the pianist in every ward she attended. She also gave her time playing piano in nursing homes throughout Davis County, always selecting songs she knew would bring joy. She loved seeing the residents sing along, especially to the classics and oldies she so carefully chose. Bringing happiness to others through music was one of her greatest joys, and we are forever grateful for that.
At age 15, during a family trip to Bear Lake, Kaye met the love of her life, Larry Richins. They were high school sweethearts and, from the very beginning, a perfect match. They married on September 5, 1963, and were later sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on October 29, 1974. Mom had a strong and unwavering testimony of her Savior, Jesus Christ, and she shared the gospel boldly with her family. None of us ever had to wonder what she believed-she made her love for the gospel known in both word and deed.Larry and Kaye were blessed with five wonderful children, who became their greatest joy. Mom took immense pride in her growing posterity-23 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren (and counting!). She kept detailed notebooks tracking each person's life, work, and accomplishments-she never wanted to forget a single thing.
In 1982, with a young family still at home, Mom was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Though the operation was unsuccessful in removing it, she faced the challenge with courage and determination. Despite enduring radiation treatments, seizures, memory loss, and fatigue throughout the rest of her life, she remained focused on raising her family and bringing joy to others. She never wanted to appear sick and always wore a smile.
Her strength and perseverance carried her back to school, where she started from scratch at the University of Utah. Against many odds, she earned a Bachelor's degree in Psychology in 1989 and a Master's degree in Health Education in 1991. This was no small feat-her memory made studying difficult, but she never shied away from hard work. At the same time, she continued teaching piano and swimming lessons in our backyard, touching the lives of countless students who still remember her with love.
Mom was a devoted caretaker, especially to our dad. She took wonderful care of him until her health no longer allowed, at which point he returned that love with tireless devotion until her passing. Watching their love was a priceless gift and a powerful example to all who knew them.
Kaye was preceded in death by her parents Frank and Vyrna Campbell. Her Mother and Father in law Vern and Doris Richins. She is survived by her 5 children Lori (Rick) Ferlin, Holly (David) Petersen, Frank and Ali Richins, Amy (Rob) Larsen and Bobbi Jo (Donald) Trimming; 23 Grandchildren and 33 Great Grandchildren.
We will all miss our mother deeply-but none more than our father. Mom, we promise to take good care of Dad/Grandpa until the beautiful day you are reunited.
