Karen Earl Johnson "K.J."

August 28, 1943 — June 10, 2026

Bountiful, UT

Karen Earl Johnson ("K.J."), age 82, passed away peacefully on June 10, 2026, at 8:01 a.m., at her home in Bountiful, Utah, surrounded by her family.

Karen was born on August 28th, 1943, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to Russell H. Earl and Lucy Parenzin Earl. She lived a life centered on family, friendship, community involvement, and the simple joys that brought happiness to those around her.

Karen shared a loving marriage with her husband, Gary M. Johnson, for 61 wonderful years. Together they built a lifetime of memories, adventures, and enduring love. She is survived by her husband, Gary; her daughter, Michelle Johnson McKay, and son-in-law, Scott McKay; her beloved grandsons, Wyatt McKay and Colten McKay; and her brother, Robert Earl and his wife, Barbara Earl.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Russell H. Earl and Lucy Parenzin Earl, and her brother, Russell “Buck” Earl.

Karen had many passions throughout her life. She enjoyed cross-stitching, spending time on FarmTown, and especially antiquing. Some of her favorite adventures involved traveling throughout the western United States in search of antiques and hidden treasures. She had a remarkable ability to see beauty and potential in forgotten pieces that others might overlook. Many antiques she brought home became cherished projects, and her enthusiasm helped inspire Gary's talent as an antique restorer.

Karen was also a pillar of her community. She was affectionately known as the “Mother of the Davis County Amateur Radio Club,” where she helped organize events, gatherings, and activities that brought members together. Her dedication, kindness, and welcoming nature made a lasting impact on countless friends throughout the amateur radio community.

Many in Bountiful will remember Karen from her daily visits to Service Drug. For years she spent her mornings there enjoying coffee, conversation, and friendship with members of the community. Her love for the people and atmosphere eventually led her to work there part-time simply for the enjoyment of being around those she cared about.

Karen was known for her signature style—a black sweatshirt and blue jeans—which reflected her practical, down-to-earth personality. Family and friends could almost always count on seeing her dressed just that way, a simple and familiar look that became uniquely her own. She was genuine, hardworking, caring, and always willing to lend a helping hand. Whether sharing stories, finding a treasure in an antique shop, helping organize a club event, or spending time with family, Karen brought warmth and laughter wherever she went.

Above all, Karen cherished her family. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, and friend whose love and support will continue to be felt by those she left behind.
