Judith Haycock Buchanan

Judith Haycock Buchanan, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, educator, and devoted disciple of Jesus Christ, was born on October 22, 1941, in Salt Lake City, Utah, to David Arthur Haycock and Maurine McClellan Haycock. She passed from this life surrounded by her family.

Judi was the cherished daughter of devoted parents, wife of a loving husband and mother to four children, fourteen grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She loved gardening in her yard including digging up rocks, some of which were bigger than she was.

Historically, her baby blessing coincided with the bombing of Pearl Harbor in Honolulu, Hawaii. The significance of this played out later when her family lived in Hawaii which instilled a lasting love of Hawaii and the Hawaiian culture.

In 1953, when she was 11, her family moved to Alexandria, Virginia, where her father would serve as personal secretary to U.S. Secretary of Agriculture Ezra Taft Benson. In February 1954, her father was called as President of the then Hawaiian Mission. That May, the family packed up their lives, traveled west, and sailed from Los Angeles to Honolulu aboard the S.S. Lurline.

Judi spent her formative teenage years in Hawaii, where she gained many memorable experiences she cherished all her life. Judi and her family later moved back to Utah, where she graduated from West High School in Salt Lake City. After graduation, she worked as a secretary at Auerbach’s Department Store.

Judi married her eternal companion, Carl Wendell Buchanan, on June 15, 1964. Together they raised a family centered on hard work, and a belief in Jesus Christ.

Judi pursued higher education at the University of Utah, where she earned a master’s degree in education and was a dedicated school teacher. She devoted years to elementary education with a specialty in the advanced learning opportunity program at Morgan Elementary in Kaysville which she was especially proud to have taught.

After retiring from her career as a teacher, Judi served faithfully as an ordinance worker in the Bountiful Utah Temple for seven years. In 2013, she and Carl served together as missionaries at the Nauvoo Temple, which was a cherished opportunity to serve side by side with her husband.

Judi is survived by her husband Carl Buchanan and children:

Carl Andrew Buchanan, who passed away shortly after birth

Heather Watkins (Chris); and

Matt Buchanan (Rachel).

Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren include:

Michael Buchanan (Macy), James and Mia Buchanan;

Katie Buchanan (Noah);

Elizabeth Read (Taylor);

Emily Potter (Kalen), Belle Potter;

Alisha Santana (David), Ruth and Jack Santana;

William Watkins; Abagail Watkins; Andrew Watkins;

Taylore Wilks (Tate), Alta and Gunnison Wilks;

Carter Johnson; Kenna Buchanan; Crew Buchanan; and McCrae Buchanan.

Judi will be remembered for her gentle strength, her loyalty to family, her love of learning, and her testimony of Jesus Christ. She lived a life of quiet faith, enduring service and at long last is now reunited with her baby Carl Andrew.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, January 2, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Russon Mortuary, 1941 North Main Street, Farmington, Utah. A viewing will be held from 9:45-10:45 a.m. prior to the services. Interment will take place at the Bountiful City Cemetery, 2224 South 200 West.
