Joyce Hardy Greenhalgh

December 27, 1927 — September 17, 2023

South Jordan, UT

On September 17, 2023, our beloved mother, grandmother, and aunt was finally able to go back home where she had wanted to go for so long. Joyce Hardy Greenhalgh lived 95 hard, wonderful years.

Joyce was born December 27, 1927, in Woods Cross, Utah, to her parents William Duard and Afton Howard Hardy. As a young girl, Joyce studied piano at the McCune School of Music in Utah, as well as seven years in Chicago, the last two years at the prestigious Chicago Musical College.

Joyce was a loving mother to five children, Dennis (Susan), Dell, Larry (Stephanie), Lynnette (George), and Kirk (Marie). All are surviving except Dell who died in infancy. Joyce loved her 22 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and 11 great-great- grandchildren.

Music always made Joyce smile. Her children can never remember a time when she wasn’t teaching piano lessons in their home or playing the organ at church. She loved long mountain car rides to see the fall leaves as well as taking trips to Chicago and Omaha to see her parents.

Joyce worked hard to support herself and her children. She was a switchboard operator and would connect Elvis Presley and his mother every Wednesday. She did data entry for the Utah State Board of Education and often ran advertisements in the Davis County Clipper seeking work in her home doing general bookkeeping, posting to accounts, typing statements, invoices, and business letters – all in addition to teaching piano lessons. She was a voracious reader of books.

Joyce struggled most of her adult life with painful arthritis. She underwent many hip and knee surgeries. Despite her physical struggles, she served a proselyting mission to England after she retired. She loved The Church of Jesus Christ and her testimony never faltered.

Joyce was blessed with devoted children who cared for her in her later years. She lived with her son Kirk and his wife Marie for seven years. Kirk and Lynnette made countless trips to the Draper Rehabilitation Center where Joyce spent the last eight and a half years of her life. The family is grateful for the many nurses and aides who cared for her tirelessly.
