Joyce Barlow Allred, beloved mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and faithful friend, passed away peacefully at her home in Bountiful, Utah, on July 27, 2025, at the age of 91.
Daughter of Walter Layton Barlow and Mildred Brown Barlow, Joyce was born on August 25, 1933, in Salt Lake City, Utah. She lived a full and devoted life centered on faith, family, music, and service. Known to many simply as "Mom," "Grandma," or affectionately as "Granny J" by some of her grandchildren, she was the proud mother of nine children — five sons and four daughters — and leaves behind a legacy that includes 28 grandchildren, 46 great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandchild. She was also quite fond of her two dogs, Shag and Molly, both Shih Tzus. It's been jokingly said that she loved her dogs more than she loved her children.
Joyce worked for many years in a pediatrician’s office, where her kindness helped ease the worries of countless young patients and their families. But her most enduring work was done at home — where her kitchen became a place of warmth and delicious memories. Her delectable rolls and homemade ice cream were legendary, and no family gathering was complete without them.
A lifelong and faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Joyce served in many callings, including many dedicated years as a temple worker. Her testimony was a quiet but powerful force, summed up in a phrase she kept taped to her cupboard: “You’ve gotta believe!”
She was a talented knitter, an accomplished seamstress, and a piano player who always had a song for the moment. In fact, if you ever talked with Joyce for more than five minutes, you likely heard her break into song, singing a tune perfectly suited to whatever you were discussing — a joyful quirk that brought laughter and connection to all who knew her. She also loved to shop, and she often purchased items with which to beautify her home. But she would just as often return those items to the store after suffering a few days from buyer's remorse. She was known as the Queen of Returns.
Joyce is now reunited with her eternal companion, Alan Allred, who passed away in 1992, as well as her two beloved daughters, Stacie Rodgers and Jennifer Allred, daughter-in-law Lynda Allred, and granddaughter Rachelle Rodgers who preceded her in death.
She is survived by her brother Douglas Barlow and by her children Steve Allred, Angela Sanders (Blair), Curtis Allred (Elise), Marshall Allred, Shannon Elton (Bret), Doug Allred, Scott Allred (Kristen), and son-in-law Neal Rodgers, along with her posterity and the many lives she touched.
She loved life and good humor. She laughed freely, and lived with steadfast grace. She will be dearly missed.
