It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Joshua Mark Checketts on April 21, 2026. He was a beloved son, brother and friend.
He was born April 15, 2004 in Whittier California. He became part of our eternal family in October 2005.
Once he learned how to walk, he did not stop. His zest for life was contagious. He was always active and spontaneous. His parents enrolled Josh in tumbling lessons just to make sure that he did not hurt himself flipping off the couch. He joined Flipside tumbling when his family moved to Syracuse. This led to competitive tumbling where he ultimately won the National Tournament in 2025.
He attended Heritage Elementary, Syracuse Elementary, Syracuse Junior High and Syracuse High School. He learned to play and love the viola. He is remembered as a dedicated and hard working student and friend.
He graduated Cum Laude from Weber State University with a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology. Most recently, he was studying for the admission test to attend dental school. He was a volunteer for Layton Hospital, The Advocate ad Litum office, and the Red Cross.
He was working at Tanner Clinic as an Urgent Care Patient Service Representative and had previously been employed at Kohls as a Retail Sales Associate.
Josh loved to spend time with his friends. He enjoyed exploring new places, especially big cities. He was especially fond of traveling to Las Vegas and anywhere where there was a beach such as Los Angeles. He loved to go to concerts featuring his favorite music artists-Charlie XCX, Lorde, Lana del Rey, and especially Ariana Grande. He also loved to spend time playing Fortnite with his friends.
Josh is survived by his parents Darin and Heather, and siblings Brianna (Bracken) Phelps, and Bryson along with Grandparents and extended family. He was preceded in death by his Grandma Denese Checketts.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am on Saturday May 2 at the Syracuse 1st Ward (700 S 2500 W, Syracuse). A viewing will be held May1 6:00-9:00pm at Russon Bros Mortuary in Syracuse (1585 W 300 S) and again at 9:30-10:30 the following morning prior to the funeral.
The family would like to thank the many coaches, teachers and mentors who touched his life and helped him to become the incredible young man that we were so fortunate to have in our lives.
