Joseph Mullen Ditty

September 27, 1935 — July 8, 2025

Herriman, UT

Joseph Mullen Ditty passed peacefully from this life on July 8, 2025. He was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland, September 27, 1935, to his parents Joseph and Lilian Ditty.

At the age of 21, Joe decided to seek a new life by emigrating to the ‘Great American West’ where he was looking to set himself up in the ‘land of opportunity’. He headed for Salt Lake City where the first person he met when getting off the bus was the love of his life, Maureen Flynn. They married soon after and had been married for 53 years when Maureen passed away. That union produced four children: Stephen, Valerie, Neil and Andrew.

Although Joe had been alone for the past 14 years, there wasn’t a day that passed that he didn’t think about, talk about and miss his sweetheart. Our comfort is knowing they are together again in the eternities.

Joe spent his life as a carpenter and craftsman by trade. His attention to detail and quality was valued by those whom he worked for and admired by those who knew him. He taught his kids how to work hard and to value the rewards of their labors. When not plying his trade, he created a garden envied by neighbors yet despised by his kids. (see comment above about learning to work). Every kind of fruit and vegetable was produced, preserved, and enjoyed.

While living in Northern Ireland, Joe spent time dreaming about America and all the adventures that awaited him there. Once he arrived, he never stopped exploring. We had many great adventures during Joe’s time here. Whether it was spending time on horseback in the Windriver Mountains fishing and hiking, camping at various places, or sitting on the beach watching a sunset. He enjoyed the world he lived in.

Joe was preceded in death by his eternal companion Maureen, their son Stephen and his siblings Jean, John, Roy, Bea and Samuel. He is survived by his children Valerie and Dave Barton, Neil and Stephanie Ditty, Andrew and Allison Ditty, nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews that love their Uncle Joe. He is also survived by his favorite brother, Bryan Ditty.
