John C Van Weezep

October 24, 1959 — October 26, 2021

John Cornelius Van Weezep passed away peacefully at home after a valiant fight with brain cancer on October 26th, 2021.

He was surrounded by his loving family. He was born October 24th, 1959 in Morgantown, West Virginia to John and Willie Van Weezep. At age four, his family moved to North Salt Lake, where they settled in a neighborhood full of boys his age who became his lifelong friends. He and his friends enjoyed many adventures together including skiing, biking, and camping. He loved the outdoors and spent many afternoons hiking in the West Desert enjoying the scenery and chasing jack rabbits. John was an avid swimmer, competing in high school and continuing to swim regularly later in life with a group of wonderful friends for over 30 years. He considers these men his brothers. He also enjoyed running, completing many half marathons across the state. John loved to learn and could often be seen carrying or reading one many of the books that filled his home. He graduated from Viewmont High School in 1977, and continued his education at the University of Utah where he received bachelors degrees in math and chemistry, and graduated with a masters degree in math in 1993. John married his lifelong sweetheart in 1988 in the Salt Lake Temple. Together they have five beautiful children and one grandchild. He was employed at L3 Harris Technologies for the past 35 years, working in many roles including Program Manager at the time of his passing. John enjoyed many close friendships there and often spoke highly of those he worked with. He was a faithful member of the LDS church where he served in many capacities. John served a mission in the Netherlands, which was particularly meaningful for him as it is the homeland of his family. He continued to serve as a young men’s leader for years and as an organist or pianist almost every Sunday since the age of 12 in congregations large and small. People often complimented the nice touch he had when he played. John was a sweet and gentle soul who was unassuming and truly loved everyone. He made friends everywhere he went and made everyone feel special, even the people at the grocery store know him by name. He will be dearly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.

John is survived by his wife Kim, his children Jake (Ashlen), Josh (Cyndi and granddaughter Collins), Emily (Kasey), Abby, and Zach. The family would like to express their heartfelt appreciation to the exceptional medical personnel at the Huntsman Cancer Institute, University of Utah and Craig H Nielsen Rehab hospital for their care, as well as the countless family, friends and neighbors who have reached out to support them during this time. You all have truly been angels for us and we could not make it through without you.
