With heavy hearts, we announce the passing of Jerald Ralph Makin, affectionately known as Jerry or Mouse, who was unexpectedly found deceased on July 2 of 2024 at the age of 58. Born on May 30, 1966 in Nephi, Utah, Jerry’s life was a testament to his love for family and the natural world.
He is survived by his two daughters Serena (Cody) Cummings and Caitlin Makin; two grandchildren Kaladin and Rayla; four brothers Ronald (Ally) Makin, David (Heather) Makin, Gary Makin, Brad (Lisa) Makin, and one sister Angela (Mike) Van Roekel. He is preceded in Death by his parents Joe and Carol Makin, a brother Steve (Cynthia) Makin and a sister Jolynn (Byron) Eddards.
Jerry was a loving and devoted Father who looked forward to his weekends and holidays with his daughters. Despite financial challenges he always found a way to be there for them. He spent countless hours playing with his daughters and teaching them many life skills. He loved the outdoors and was constantly out camping or fishing and made sure his daughters knew how to set up a tent, worm a hook, swim, and cook a hobo dinner at the campfire.
He found awe and inspiration in nature, loving opportunities to lay out under the stars and observe the heavens. He loved tending to the various fruit trees, rose bushes, and garden spaces on his parent’s property where he lived most of his adult life. His dream was to have his own ranch or farm to tend.
Jerry suffered from mental illnesses that went undiagnosed until late in his life which unfortunately contributed to a hard life. Having grown up in a generation where mental illness was something to be ashamed of, he refused to acknowledge his difficulties and seek help but instead chose to isolate himself, especially as his children got older and began leading their own lives. He didn’t let his family know of his health conditions, instead putting on a brave face and a smile.
While we mourn his loss, we take comfort in knowing that he is now at peace, free from the challenges he faced in life.
Those who knew Jerry and would like to share their memories of him are welcome to attend a Celebration of Life held on July 14 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at:
Mountain View Park
1500 North 1700 West
Farr West, UT 84404
In lieu of flowers the family asks that a memorial donation be made to offset funeral costs. They also encourage the planting of a tree or rose bush to honor his love for natural beauty.
