Our beloved Jan slipped away peacefully in her home on February 24, 2024. She was surrounded by loved ones in her final moments and is now reunited with the love of her life, Bud Melvin.
Mary Janice Ruth Powers was born on July 31, 1931 in Ford's Branch, Kentucky to parents Oliver Winfield Powers and Ida Malinda Ford. She was married in 1950 to Veril "Bud" Wesley Melvin in Arlington, VA, later having a daughter (Rebecca) and a son (Bryan). They were married for 57 years until the day he passed away in 2007. She never remarried and stayed devoted to him until her passing. She wore both of their wedding rings daily, always carrying his love with her. Janice worked as an Events Coordinator for the National Park Service, National Capitol Region, Washington D.C. until her retirement in 1992. Upon retiring, she moved with her husband, Bud, to North Salt Lake, UT to be closer to her precious daughter and only two grandchildren (Justin and Jerika). She was very involved in their lives, never missing a birthday or holiday, and always joining in on family trips and events. Jan was a very faithful and devoted Christian, and she loved her church family dearly (Redeeming Life Church, formerly First Southern Baptist Church in Bountiful, UT). She attended church regularly and volunteered for many church activities and events.
Jan was a cherished mother of two: Rebecca Lee (Ken Christensen) and Bryan (Sharon) Melvin, and leaves behind her grandchildren: Justin (Autumn) Lee and Jerika (Mat) Park, and great-grandchildren: Luna Rose Lee (6) , Caspian Roy Lee (3), Atticus William Park (4), and Irelyn Janice Park (1). GiGi was very important to both her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and will forever be with her family in spirit. Proceeded in death by her parents, husband, and 3 siblings: Jean, Francis, and Joanne, leaving behind sisters Jessica and Joyce.
Special thanks to Ken Christensen and Rebecca Lee for being there for Jan to help care for her in her final year of life. Because of them, she was able to be at home and spend the remainder of her time where she felt most comfortable. We want to thank Utah Home Health and Hospice and Visiting Angels for their exceptional care and kindness.
