Hazel Buxton Berger

October 1, 1935 — February 27, 2021

Our beloved mother, grandmother, sister, aunt, Hazel Buxton Berger passed away peacefully on Saturday February 27, 2021 at the age of 85 in Centerville, Utah.

Hazel was born in Idaho Falls, Idaho on October 1, 1935 to Orville J.Buxton and Estella L. Bates. She was the fourth of five children. She married Keith L. Berger on October 16, 1953. They were later sealed in the Salt Lake Temple.

Hazel was raised in Teton Valley, Idaho where she learned the value of hard work growing up on the family farm in Bates. She told endearing stories of her childhood on the farm; hoeing long rows of crops, driving the farm truck full of “spuds” without brakes to the silo, riding the family horse, Ol’ Gladys, to school, driving the derrick horse during the haying season, playing house in the willow trees and enjoying other farm adventures with her brothers, sisters and cousins. She always said she had a “wonderful childhood”.

Hazel was the only student in her grade in Bates in a two-room schoolhouse until 8th grade. She was ecstatic to finally start attending school in Driggs in 8th grade where there would be other students to study and socialize with. At Teton High School Hazel was a cheerleader, was on the basketball team, was the school book editor and played the clarinet in the orchestra. She received a scholarship to BYU to major in english, but chose to marry Keith instead.

Hazel was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and a long time member of the Centerville 3rd ward. She was often the ward chorister and organist. She loved music.
She played piano and was a seamstress, making wedding and prom dresses, suits and hundreds of quilts. She made quilts for every one of her children and grandchildren. She was a Davis County School Food cook for thirteen years and worked at the Bountiful Chuck-a-rama for 23 years where she made countless friends.

Hazel is survived by her four daughters, Patti, Shirlee, Gina and Jamie; her two sons, Jay and Ty; her brother, Tomas Buxton; as well as twenty six grandchildren and forty-two great grandchildren, with four more on the way this year. She was preceded in death by her former husband, Keith, her son, Statt, and granddaughters Alyssa Burnett (Jamie) and Vanessa Berger (Ty), her sisters LaJean and Shirley and her brother, Farrell.

Hazel was ever bright, cheerful, happy to see you, engaging, had a great sense of humor, was always ready for an adventure, loving, social and kind.

Funeral services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday March 6, 2021 at the LDS wardhouse, 950 N. Main, Centerville, Utah, where a viewing will be held from 11:30 a.m. – 12:45 p.m. prior to services. Interment will be at the Centerville cemetery following the funeral.

The funeral will streamed live on the Russon Brothers Mortuary Facebook page.
