Gwenda Lu Taylor Mitchell

Gwenda Lu Taylor Mitchell, 90, passed away peacefully Thursday, October 9, 2025, at her home in Midvale. She was born June 9, 1935, in Salt Lake City, Utah to Clifford Van and Norma Rachel (Law) Taylor.

She married Darrell G Mcllrath on April 10, 1953. During the years they were raising their 5 children, the family took lots of fishing and camping trips. The yearly family vacation was to Yellowstone National Park. They divorced in November 1985.

She married LeRoy Mitchell on October 12, 1992. They became eternal companions on August 19, 1994, in the Jordan River Temple. They enjoyed traveling together, gardening, building children’s play furniture and playing cards with friends until his passing in March 2008.

She began volunteering at the Senior Center where she met Jack Phelps. They were married on March 14, 2009.

They had many wonderful times going to the Senior Center for lunch once a week, listening to music and going to church. They enjoyed life together for almost a decade before his passing in August 2018.

She liked to do hand embroidery. Over the years she did many sets of dish towels that she gave away as gifts. She also collected thimbles from places she'd been, or that she just saw and liked. Some were given to her as well. Her collection is about 300 thimbles now.

She is survived by her children, Kathie (Tom) May, LuAnn (Lynn) Holgreen, Scott (Dorothy) Mcllrath, Brian (Bonnie) Mcllrath and Jim (Windy) Mcllrath. She has 22 grandchildren and 33 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by her parents, brothers, Merrill and Val, and sister, Helen Cox. Also, a grandson, James Matthew Mcllrath and three great grandchildren, Jaxon Mcllrath, Lilah Mae and Everlee Joy Holgreen.

The family would like to thank all her caregivers from Spring Gardens Midvale, Suncrest Hospice and many others for everything they have done for her and our family.

A graveside service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 18, 2025, at the Bountiful City Cemetery, 2224 South 200 West, Bountiful, Utah.
