On Sunday, May 18, 2025, Gwen Goble Mathews completed her mortal journey surrounded by her family on both sides of the veil. Gwen was born on August 18, 1938, as the second child of Charles Edwin Goble and Allie Heath Sudweeks Goble.
Gwen married Stephen Max Alvey (Max) on September 15, 1956. They were sealed together in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple, on December 16, 1957. Due to Max’s Naval Service, Gwen and Max lived in many states and a US territory. They brought eleven children into the world. Sadly, Max and one son, Tommie, passed away on June 26, 1970.
Gwen married Jefferson Slade Mathews (Slade) on December 15, 1972, adding two additional children through Slade’s previous marriage. Gwen and Slade added four additional children to the family. Gwen and Slade were a wonderful example of what a married couple should be, taking care of one another through many temporal challenges. Gwen was a wonderful caregiver until the time Slade was called to his heavenly home in 2016.
Gwen was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She served in many capacities, including Relief Society President, Service Missionary, and Nursery Leader. She was a great example of serving her fellow man. Above all, her calling as a mother was of greatest importance. She loved, counseled, and reproved unconditionally. She saw the best in others and tried to help them see it in themselves.
Gwen is survived by her children: Mike (Laurie) Alvey, Debbie (Glen) Harrison, Dan (Diane) Alvey, Jeff (Monea) Mathews, Lynn (Susie) Alvey, Steve (Shannon) Alvey, Greg (Jeannie) Alvey, Robert Alvey, Sandy Bulfin, John (Jennifer) Alvey, Susan (Bart) Marston, Brian (Cathie) Mathews, Brad (Andrea) Mathews, Becky Mathews, and Brenda Brann; siblings: Linda (Max) Hatfield and Dennis (Lynda) Goble; 55 grandchildren, 116 great-grandchildren, and 2 great-great grandchildren.
Gwen is preceded in death by husbands: Stephen Max Alvey and Jefferson Slade Mathews; children: Thomas Earl Alvey and Jeri Ann Wise. The reunion Gwen experienced with these and countless other loved ones would have been joyous. She will now watch over and await the safe return of all her posterity.
