Today, we gather to honor a man whose life was defined by kindness, grit, loyalty, and love — Grant Edward Salter, known to many simply as Grunt or El Grunto. Grant passed away peacefully on July 9, 2026, in the home he built with his own hands, after a courageous battle with cancer. He was 82 years old.

Grant was born on November 1, 1943, in Salt Lake City to Vern and Lillie Salter. He grew up in Woods Cross, where he quickly learned that the mountains were just as much a classroom as any school building. If Grant wasn’t at Bountiful High, you could bet he was up on the mountain with his horse, hunting, exploring, and living the kind of adventures most people only hear about.

It was in high school that Grant met two people who would shape the rest of his life. One was his good friend Roger Jacketta, a partner in mischief, adventure, and more than a few stories that probably shouldn’t be told in church. The other was Gloria Lee Foust — the love of his life. It wasn’t love at first sight, but Grant had a way of growing on people. And once Gloria fell for him, that was it. Together they built a life anchored in devotion, hard work, and laughter. They welcomed their daughter, Cherie Kaye, their pride and joy.

Grant didn’t just build a home — he built their forever home in Mountain Green, board by board, with the help of close friends. That house stands today not just as a structure, but as a testament to his determination, craftsmanship, and love for his family.

Professionally, Grant spent his career at Weber Basin Water, where he served as a Water Manager. He oversaw major projects like Causey Reservoir and the Weber River Canal and spillway — work that shaped the community and will continue to serve generations. But just as meaningful as the work was the friendship he found there. Grant met Jim West, who became his best friend. The two shared countless ATV rides, hunting trips, camping adventures, and years of laughter that could fill volumes.

If you knew Grant, you knew his heart. He was kind. He was generous. He was the type of man who didn’t expect perfection — he just expected you to try your best. And he lived that way every day. He was one of the hardest‑working men you’d ever meet, but he carried that strength with humility and warmth.

Grant is preceded in death by his parents, Vern and Lil; his beloved wife, Gloria; and his son‑in‑law, Jon Hess. He is survived by his daughter Cherie (Mike) Carter of Kaysville; his granddaughters Nicole (Ty) Ames of Mountain Green and Krishna Hess of Layton; and his great‑grandchildren Colter, Jace, Grant Jr., Cayden, and Kaylee — each of whom carries a piece of his legacy.

Grant lived a life full of purpose, adventure, and love. He leaves behind stories that will be told for generations, lessons that will continue to guide his family, and a legacy built not just in the mountains or the water projects he managed, but in the hearts of everyone who knew him.

Today, we honor a man who worked hard, loved deeply, and lived fully. We honor Grant — Grunt — El Grunto. And we carry him with us, always.
