Gilbert Lawrence Wellisch was born on August 17, 1943, in Boise, Idaho, to Gilbert Cecil Wellisch and Maybelle Irene Priest. He passed away on June 11, 2026.
Gil served in the United States Army as a paratrooper, and being airborne was one of the great thrills of his life. He loved the opportunity to jump and he carried that sense of adventure with him always.
On June 26, 1968, Gil married Barbara Dee McBride in the Idaho Falls Temple. Barbara was his favorite! Together they built a life rooted in faith, devotion, and service that would span more than five decades.
Gil earned his bachelor's degree from BYU in elementary education, taught 5th and 6th grade in Midway, Utah, and continued to love teaching throughout his life. Later, he was proud to support the General Authorities of the Church through his work in IT.
Gil gave his life to service in the truest sense. A devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, he served a full-time mission in Norway and then numerous missions with Barbara later in life. Whatever was asked of him, he gave it gladly.
Those who knew Gil will remember him most for the way he treated people. He was kind, patient, and loving, accepting everyone exactly as they were. He enjoyed saying: "In a world where you can be anything, be kind." Family was the center of his world, and his arms were always open for a hug.
Gil loved life and was grateful for every single day of it. He found joy in 3D printing, motorcycles, camping, family history, disc golf, pickleball, finding new projects, and he could lose happy hours researching online.
Gil was preceded in death by his parents, Gilbert and Maybelle, and his brother Bill. He is survived by his beloved wife, Barbara; his siblings, Janice, Jean Ann, Garry, and Jim; seven children; sixteen grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren, along with the many others who loved him deeply.
