Gerda Edith Mueller Geisler

August 23, 1923 — April 21, 2022

Gerda Edith Mueller Geisler, age 98, passed away April 21, 2022. She was born August 23, 1923 in Hamburg, Germany, daughter of Alfred E. Mueller and Hedwig F. Walde, during Germany’s post World War I social and economic upheaval. Eventually, she emigrated to America with her parents and sisters, Mary and Irmgard, in August of 1929, settling in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Gerda graduated from West high School with honors, attended LDS Business College, then worked as a secretary in Salt Lake City. In 1944, with the war against Germany, and having previously been a German immigrant, she wanted to show her loyalty and patriotism as a United States citizen and joined the Navy. She served as a Wave until her honorable discharge in 1946, having been stationed in New York, Oklahoma, Nevada, and San Francisco. While in San Francisco, she met her future husband Winfred R. Geisler, and were later married civilly December 1, 1946, in New York City.

In July of 1947 Gerda and Winfred moved from New York to Bountiful, Utah, where they lived the remainder of their lives and raised four children. Winfred was baptized into The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in 1949 and then later in 1950 was sealed to Gerda in the Salt Lake Temple. Gerda served in various teachings and leadership callings throughout her life, where her gifts of teaching and love of learning, as well as her deep love of literature, had opportunity for expression. She also worked as an executive secretary for various businesses and organizations and was a highly valued and respected employee with her competence, efficiency, and integrity.

Gerda and Winfred initially had difficulty having children, but with Gerda’s persistence and faith in God they were miraculously able to have children. Her whole life was focused on serving and meeting the needs of her family, making sacrifices physically, emotionally, and monetarily to help provide for those needs. Gerda always met her challenges and difficulties in life with trust in the Lord, and throughout her life counseled her family to do the same as they experienced their own personal difficulties.

Gerda’s husband, Winfred R. Geisler, passed away May 16, 2011. She is survived by her four children and their spouses, Daniel and Julie Geisler, Mark and Pamela Geisler, Mary Lynne (Sessions), and Steven and Sandie Geisler, with 12 grandchildren and 18 great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held Monday April 25, 2022 at 12:00 p.m. at the Bountiful City Cemetery, with a viewing from 11:00-11:30 a.m. at Russon Mortuary, 295 North Main Street, Bountiful, Utah prior to services.
