Garn Cleon Nelson

July 13, 1936 — August 1, 2025

Bountiful, UT

Garn Cleon Nelson, age 89, passed away peacefully on August 1, 2025, in Bountiful, Utah. Born on July 13, 1936, in Redmond, Utah, Garn lived a life rooted in faith, service, and devotion to family.

Garn married Ida Ann Taylor on May 31, 1958. Their union was later solemnized in the Salt Lake City LDS Temple on August 16, 1971. Together they built a legacy of love and commitment that spanned more than six decades.

A proud veteran, Garn served active duty in the United States Air Force. His dedication to service extended far beyond his military years. Deeply committed to his faith and community, he spent much of his life serving in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He held numerous callings throughout the years, including serving on the High Council. However, it was his work with the Boy Scouts and youth that left an enduring impact. As a Scoutmaster, Garn’s troop was recognized among the top fifty LDS troops worldwide for two consecutive years—a testament to his leadership and influence. In recognition of his exceptional service to youth through Scouting, he was awarded the prestigious Silver Beaver Award.

Garn worked at Hill Air Force Base as a Software Supervisor for over 30 years. However, Farming was his second occupation. In fact, it was not just his second occupation—it was his lifelong passion. He found joy and purpose in the hard work of farming, and in being a cattleman, and he instilled that same appreciation for hard work and stewardship in those around him. He was also the Gunnison watermaster for many years.

Garn’s greatest joy came from his family. He is survived by his beloved wife Ida; their children Stewart (Jamie) Nelson, Suzanne (Tracy) Thain, and Stacy Nelson; grandchildren Blake Thain; Heather (Bridger) Barrett; Madison (Marquis) Beans; Ashlee (Zachary) Miller; Ray (Megan) Nelson; James Nelson; Taylor (Catie) Nelson; Kristi Nelson; and Nicholas Peters; as well as twelve great-grandchildren: Khloe, Millie, Brooks, Kendric, Remi, Elle, Mila, Callum, Marley, Bonnie, Taft, and Charlie.

He is also survived by sisters Grace Nelson and Iris (Don) Hales; sisters-in-law Rhea Nelson, Elaine Nelson, and Janice (Allan) Harris; brother-in-law Paul Taylor; and many nieces and nephews who cherished him deeply. Garn was preceded in death by his parents and seven brothers.

His legacy lives on through generations who were shaped by his example of integrity, humility, faithfulness— and above all—love.
