Flora Brooks McMullin Mitchell

Aug 29, 1929 — Jul 22, 2026

Farmington, UT

Flora Brooks McMullin Mitchell, age 96, departed this life in the wee hours of Wednesday, July 22, 2026. She was born to Flora Morris and George Brooks, Jr. on August 29, 1929, in St. George, Utah, the youngest of nine children. Flora was, no doubt, welcomed home by a host of loved ones. She was known for her strength, resilience, warmth, humor, patience, and especially, for her unyielding faith in the Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

She taught by example to pray, to serve, to love, and to laugh. She was quick to acknowledge the strength and devotion to righteous causes that were the core of her ancestral heritage. She served faithfully throughout her life in every organization of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She was an exemplary leader in Relief Society, Young Women, and Primary. She sang in ward choirs and in the Singing Mothers. In later years, she felt it a privilege to serve as a temple ordinance worker. She was a devoted ministering sister to the very end of her life, a humble disciple of Christ.

Flora attended schools in St. George, graduating from Dixie College with a class of lifelong friends. Most important in that group of friends was Lawrence “Larry” Savage McMullin. Inseparable from 8th grade on, they married in the St. George Temple of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on May 12, 1950. They became parents of six children and spent 44 years pursuing various business interests, including trucking, real estate, and Quarter Horses. Additionally, Flora had varying professional careers -- running a restaurant, and working in retail sales, banking, and bookkeeping. Through all of those demands, she was a homemaker extraordinaire, and thoroughly enjoyed taking care of family, keeping a clean and orderly home, and tucking us into bed each night. She was a beautiful seamstress and an expert in knitting and handwork. Sorrow struck hard when Larry died unexpectedly on March 16, 1994.

After being widowed 15 years, Flora married Reid Mack Mitchell, a family friend, and enjoyed 11 years of companionship, travel and service while living in the Foxboro area of North Salt Lake. His children and grandchildren became as dear to her as her own. Reid died April 22, 2020.

Flora has enjoyed good health, vigor, and a sound mind even as she neared the end of her 10th decade. She never missed a party or an invitation to dinner. She was an excellent cook and was anxious to try new recipes up until the last year. What she had, she shared. She knew trials, but never allowed them to crush or define her. She lived in faith, believing God will make things right, and she placed her trust in Him.

Flora is survived by a grateful posterity, including four children: Kyle L. McMullin (Karen); Laurie Clegg (Daniel); Gwen Hill (Bart); Matt B. McMullin (Erin); and a son-in-law, John Van Beekum. She is also survived by 21 grandchildren and 64 great-grandchildren (one more on the way) on the McMullin side; plus, Reid’s two sons, Cory Mitchell (Sherry) and David Mitchell (Sharon) with an additional 4 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren on the Mitchell side. Brother-in-law, Keith B. McMullin (Carolyn), and a host of cherished nieces and nephews survive her as well.

She is preceded in death by her husbands, her parents, all eight siblings and spouses, her first child, 5-year-old Dan Harvey McMullin, an infant grandson, Thomas James McMullin, and her eldest daughter, Julie Van Beekum.

The family wishes to thank the many caregivers who served Mom in the final days of her life. She loved and appreciated each one.
