It was 20 degrees below zero and the famous Bountiful East Wind was blowing on the night of January 6, 1937, that Evelyn Call Lemon was born to Lyman and Leah Ford Call. She was born in their home at 396 West Pages Lane here in Bountiful. Doctor J. C. Stocks was the attending physician. She was the fourth child of six and the second daughter. Two additional daughters would follow in the coming years.
She grew up on the family farm of 200 acres of row crops, working at the side of her father. The planting of seeds in the spring never left her as she was still planting just three weeks prior to her death. Her love of watching, caring for, watering and nourishing never left her as she transferred those skills into her life with her beloved husband, three children, fifteen grandchildren and 30+ great-grandchildren, 10,000 students, and many friends and loved ones.
Her education began in the West Bountiful elementary school followed by Stoker School. Junior High school was at South Davis Junior High now known as Bountiful Junior High and finishing at Davis High School. Following high school, she enrolled at Utah State University pursuing a degree in Home Economics Education and Child Development. She completed her degree in three years, was employed at Roy Junior High, and serving as a Stake missionary, all the while writing weekly to her missionary serving in the Netherlands Mission for two and one-half years.
On March 27, 1959, she and her beloved missionary were married in the Salt Lake Temple by Elder Mark E. Petersen for time and all eternity. Three wonderful children came into the family: Scott, Susan and Shaunna.
Throughout her life she loved the Lord and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Her service was always impeccable and given without any fanfare. She made a home that was just like the temple: sacred, beautiful, peaceful, open, inviting and filled with love. She served in Ward and Stake Relief Societies, Ward, Stake and Mission Primaries, Young Women and as a full-time missionary in Scotland with her husband for two years as secretary to the Mission President. While serving the mission she was able to fulfill a life-long dream of visiting the sites and graveyards of her Scottish ancestors. Upon returning home, she and her husband served in the cafeteria and as ordinances workers in the Bountiful Temple for thirteen years.
For 30 years she taught thousands of young men and women at Bountiful High School – home of the Braves. Her shared skills at cooking, sewing, fashion merchandizing, home living and child development have influenced families for generations. She shared those skills with friends, family and anyone who would ask, stop by or call for some kind of help.
In the early morning hours of May 7, 2025, at 1:12 a.m. – five months and one day following her 88th birthday, during another famous Bountiful East Wind, she heard the call: “Evelyn, Come home. Come home. Come just as you are.” She looked up at her beloved Dick and said: “Thank you for taking such good care of me. I can’t do it anymore.” And with three labored breaths, having kept her most sacred covenants slipped through the veil free of pain and trauma for a glorious reunion with He who saw her through it all – Jesus Christ her beloved Savior, and precious family and friends who were awaiting her.
She is survived by her beloved husband of 66 years, Richard Scott Lemon, her son Scott and his wife Carol Gudmundson, daughter Susan and her husband LaMar Bangerter, and daughter Shaunna and her husband Mark Rice; fifteen grandchildren and thirty-one great-grandchildren, sisters Ilene Savage and Ruth Fisher, three loving Aunts: Elizabeth Hess, Nadine Steppan and Norma Leavitt, many nieces and nephews and scores of cousins. Preceded in death by her parents Lyman and Leah, two brothers Lyman Merrill and Rodney Ford and her older sister Erma Jean Call Hancey.
