Erna Erika Vogel was born in Mannheim, Baden-Wuertemberg, Germany on November 28, 1927. Grandma Vogel, as she is affectionately known, lived through the horrors of World War II. In 1945, she got married and soon gave birth to her first child, Juergen Mueller. She later followed her sister, Rosa Wooton, to Salt Lake City, Utah, in 1954, when she was 27 years old.
Nineteen-year-old Henry Vogel had fallen in love with her in Germany, and followed her to the United States. They married and Henry joined the US Army. He was sent to Germany, where her second son, Michael H. Vogel was born. In 1961, they went back to the US on the USS General Darby. Juergen decided to stay in Bountiful when the family moved to Germany again. They moved almost 12 or more times going to Augsburg, back to Utah, over to Fort Benning, Georgia, and Henry went to Vietnam, and the family finally settled in Bountiful, Utah in 1976.
Erna was married for 32 years and had a lot of good years, filled with traveling the US and visits back to Germany. Over the course of several years, she vacationed in Italy, Austria, Switzerland and other parts of Europe. She had a close relationship with her sister, Rosa Wooten. They took wonderful trips to Lake Powell, Yellowstone, Las Vegas, Disneyland, San Francisco and Seattle. Most of the time with Robert Wooton at the wheel, safely taking us all over the place.
She later divorced, but stayed firm in her house that she cared for and paid off the mortgage. She found great joy being with all of her grandkids and great-grandchildren. She was a fantastic cook and baker. Everyone loved her Christmas Cookies, Cheesecake, Butter Cream Torte, Dampfnudel, Plum Dumplings, Spaetzle and Rouladen.
Erna also found great joy spending time in her garden and keeping it pristine. Her other favorite past-time was going to Wendover and playing the Nickel Slots! Erna lived a full and wonderful life, and came so close to the century mark. She passed away peacefully at Lakeview Hospital in Bountiful at the incredible age of 98. She will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved her!
