Erma Joyce Tonnesen, (Erma) beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully on May 5, 2026, at the age of 94. She was born on February 16, 1932, in Mountain Ville, Utah, to James and Vera Burnside.
Erma grew up in Mt. Pleasant, Utah, as the second to youngest of three brothers and three sisters. As a child, she grew up with a simple life living on a small farm. Erma graduated from North Sanpete High School, Utah.
Erma met the love of her life, Richard, at a rolling skating rink where they skated competitively and received awards. They married on May 21, 1952, and moved to Bountiful in 1959, where they started a family shortly after. Their marriage was then sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on September 17, 1977, a commitment that reflected their deep faith and devotion to one another. Together they built a life centered on family, service, and enduring love.
Erma enjoyed camping with her family at Wasatch State Park, rafting down the Green River and playing golf. While retired, Richard and Erma traveled the U.S. in their RV, went on cruises to Alaska, Hawaii and cruised through the Panama Canal.
A faithful member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Erma served diligently in many callings over the years. Her testimony was evident in the way she lived—quietly, humbly, and with unwavering dedication to her faith and community.
Erma is survived by children Pam (John) Sessions and Troy (Tammy) Tonnesen. Erma cherished her grandchildren Ryan, Cody (Erin), Brady, Whitney (Kevin), Jaydon and Sydney. Great-grandchildren Julian, Oliver and Maylah.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband, sisters, brothers and grandson Joshua.
