Our mom, Erma Jean Call Hancey passed away quietly on Sunday, August 25, 2024. She was surrounded by her family throughout the day. She was 89 years old.
Mom was born April 24, 1935 in Bountiful Utah. She is the daughter of Lyman and Leah Ford Call and was a welcome addition to their family. She has two older brothers–Merrill and Rodney, along with three younger sisters–Evelyn, Ilene and Ruth. Along with her parents and siblings, cousins, aunts and uncles, she worked on their large family farm in Bountiful. They grew many varieties of vegetables and fruits as well as raised animals.
Mom went to several schools in Davis County. During her junior year in high school, she got a job at the local telephone company as a telephone operator and continued to work there after beginning her college studies at BYU. She enjoyed her job as well as the friends she met there.
While working at the phone company, one of these friends asked Mom if she was willing to go on a blind date with her and her boyfriend, and Mom agreed. This blind date is how she met her beloved husband, our dad Harold. They were soon married in the Salt Lake Temple on September 9, 1955.
After their marriage, they moved to Logan where Dad finished his degree while Mom continued to work for the local telephone company. Soon four daughters arrived–Cathy, Marie, Karen, and Linda–making their family complete. Mom loved her girls!
Mom later graduated from BYU in Elementary Education. She began her teaching career at Adelaide Elementary in North Salt Lake where she taught third grade for 18 years.
Mom loved to travel. When she was younger, her family would travel to many places in Utah and the surrounding area. Later, with her own family, she continued to travel. This included many places in the United States and Europe. She was also an accomplished cook, candy maker, and home canner–skills she learned from her mother and passed on to her daughters.
Mom was a devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. She fulfilled many callings which included serving a mission with her husband at the Salt Lake Family History Center.
Harold, her beloved husband, passed away March 24, 2022.
Mom suffered with dementia in her later years which robbed her of many of her memories. But she always knew her daughters' faces–even if sometimes she could not always remember their names. She moved to memory care at Legacy Village in Provo in late December 2022 and grew to love her time there. We express appreciation to the staff at Legacy Village for their kind and loving care of our mother.
Mom was preceded in death by her Husband Harold, her parents, her brothers Merrill and Rodney, and son-in-law, Todd Killian. She is survived by her sisters, Evelyn (Richard) Lemon, Ilene Savage, and Ruth Fisher, daughters Catherine (Randy) Wade, Marie Killian, Karen (Kent) Winterton, Linda (Ron) Richey, ten grandchildren, and 14 great grandchildren.
