Edward Jesse Vandivere, born May 4, 1924, beloved father, grandfather, and husband died September 20th, 2012, of pneumonia. Throughout his life, he dedicated himself to nurturing those around him, constantly exemplifying Christ’s example to put others before self.
In 1986, one of Ed’s children had car trouble in a distant city. By an odd coincidence, the mechanic had known Ed several years before. “If you are Ed’s child, said the stranger, “I will trust you with everything I have, for he is one of the most Christ-like men I have ever known.” All of us who knew and loved Ed echo this sentiment; his life work was to love and support those around him. Although he received many Church callings and served two LDS missions, he was most fulfilled as a Bishop, a position he held for close to a decade. In that capacity he was able to exercise his tremendous capacity for compassion and kindness, daily enacting his desire to understand others.
Born and raised in LaGrange, Illinois, he served proudly in both World War II and the Korean Conflict. He went to college after returning from the service and graduated from Purdue University with a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering. He married Barbara Dalton Vandivere in 1953 and joined the LDS church in 1954. He and Barbara were sealed for time and all eternity in the Salt Lake Temple in 1956.
Ed worked for nearly forty years as an electrical engineer, overseeing and managing large electrical projects throughout the Western United States, Central America, and the Pacific Islands. Since 2006, he enjoyed the warm and tremendously caring community of Heritage Place in Bountiful, Utah. In 2009, Barbara passed away, and Ed spent the last three years of his life happily married to his beloved LaRae Crosland Vandivere.
He is survived by LaRae, of Bountiful, Utah; his sister, Marilyn Mauch of Bristol, Tennessee; his sons Brian (Renee) of Woodlands, Texas, and David (Diane) of Bountiful, Utah, and by his daughter Julie Vandivere (Elise Nicol) of Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, and by 12 grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He is also survived by LaRae’s children who he came to love, Mark and Kathy Tenhoeve and Jeff and Bonnie Crosland and their children and grandchildren. Although we will miss him profoundly, we are grateful for his spiritual legacy. His example taught us all to work to live selflessly. Services will be held at 11:00 AM, Monday, September 24th at the LDS South Stake Center, 1250 South Main, Bountiful Utah. Friends may call on Monday before the service from 10:00 to 10:45.
