David Job Smith, 29, son of Ryan and Lezli Smith, passed away on Thursday, October 22nd at home. The heavens were truly weeping that afternoon.
He was born on a beautiful day — September 4th, 1997. He sparkled from the get-go, with his perfectly round head and large, very inquisitive eyes. He is the middle child of 5, and always had an abundance of energy. He is survived by his parents, Ryan and Lezli Smith, Quinton Smith, McKenna (Caden) McBride, Christopher (Anastacha) Smith, and Megan Smith (and his adorable Doodle, Barclay).
As a young boy, he had many very specific interests, including big antlers, grand pianos, a coin collection and trucks with duallys and big exhaust pipes…
Then, his true love of sports kind of overshadowed everything else as he played football, soccer and then finally basketball. He was meant to be moving, with a ball in his hand.
He loved playing the piano and was very good. The rhythm and the melody just poured from him and it would stop you in your tracks to listen. He also loved being part of the choir for many years, in junior high and high school.
As he became an adult, David loved hiking, biking, and spending time in nature. He rarely missed a weekend going to his family’s cabin, and loved taking rides in the side-by-side looking for animals and talking around the firepit.
His friends and family members have been his true treasures, and his heart is giant and his loyalty unmatched. His middle name, “Job,” comes from his pioneer ancestor Job Taylor Smith, who endured deep trials and remained loyal to his friends and family.
He served a church mission in Oregon and had a love of the Ducks, so that was extra fun. He loved serving people, giving them messages of hope and helping people whose hands hung down.
He enjoyed his two years at Ensign College where he earned an associate’s degree in Digital Marketing. He wanted to be a sportscaster or sportswriter, as he was extremely creative, well-spoken, and a gifted writer. It was always entertaining to listen to him talk to a grown man, many years older than him, who thought he knew a lot about sports, then to have David just leave him in the dust with his knowledge.
Loving and truly seeing people became his legacy and also his superpower, as he felt like he didn’t always measure up in the world’s eyes. The world values results, while God loves effort. David was a straight-A student of effort and kindness. This quote by C.S. Lewis is how David saw and treated others: “It is a serious thing to live in a society of possible gods and goddesses, to remember that the dullest and most uninteresting person you talk to may one day be a creature which, if you saw it now, you would be strongly tempted to worship...”
His deepest desire was to fall in love, get married, start a family, and be able to provide for them. He wanted nothing more than to be a good husband and father.
He will be missed every single day, and we are committed to trying to better adopt many of his virtues, as we look to comfort those who stand in need of comfort, without judgment or conditions, and help those around us to realize their potential.
We will be honoring David with a viewing and funeral on Friday, October 30th, 2026. The viewing will be held from 9:45–10:45 a.m. with the funeral following at 11:00 a.m. at the LDS church building located at 720 E 550 N, Bountiful, UT 84010. Interment will be at the Bountiful City Cemetery.
Services will be streamed live on the Russon Mortuary and Crematory YouTube Channel and on this obituary page. See YouTube video below.
